Why I liked a vampire show cashing in on the Twilight craze: It starts out a typical “pure normal girl falls in love with vampire,” but that ends up an entry to a show that’s really about small town mythology and history (and the rewriting of both). I mostly avoid the fandom for this show because it drives me nuts to see fans bending over backwards to excuse Damon's behavior, but hating on Bonnie for having a logical, reasonable attitude towards a psycho killer. Bonnie is the Common Sense Queen of Mystic Falls and a total badass.

Also, within 4 chapters of the first book, I've already noted that Elenas's sister is now a brother (who keeps having women die on him to add to his angst-THE WRITERS ADMIT TO THIS) and Bonnie is apparently a combination of two of Elena's friends, and they apparently thought the best way to make Caroline likable was to strip her of self-esteem. (I do appreciate that her low self-esteem seems to largely be because she's smart and knows how people see her, but it's aggravating to watch that and realize the writers probably thought that was the best way to make a blonde cheerleader more likable.)

FAIL.
This makes me want to write a TVD fanfic where all the men die. Except for Damon and Stefan, because I enjoy both of them muchly.

True. I feel like they needed to watch more Cordelia Chase and season 1 Gossip Girl before they wrote Caroline, because I see what they're trying to do with her but it's just not working for me.
