The Vampire Diaries: Season One (not that I've been quiet about it)

Why I liked a vampire show cashing in on the Twilight craze: It starts out a typical “pure normal girl falls in love with vampire,” but that ends up an entry to a show that’s really about small town mythology and history (and the rewriting of both). It also has a traditional “pure good girl” heroine who is assertive and stands up for herself and ( Read more... )

When Damon and Jeremy ~hugged it out~ over Damon mindwiping Jeremy I wanted to throw things at the TV. Damon gets woobie cookies for apologizing to Jeremy, but is he ever going to say something to Caroline about how he's sorry he abused and raped her? Unlikely. And it bugs me that Elena is just letting that go and becoming buddy-buddy with Damon. I had hope at first when she confronted Stefan about what Damon was doing and Stefan used the "but he's erasing her memory!" excuse and Elena sharply pointed out that didn't make it alright. Yet now... apparently it does make it alright? Frustrating.

I mostly avoid the fandom for this show because it drives me nuts to see fans bending over backwards to excuse Damon's behavior, but hating on Bonnie for having a logical, reasonable attitude towards a psycho killer. Bonnie is the Common Sense Queen of Mystic Falls and a total badass.

Vampire Diaries has some forehead slapping moments, but for the most part I really enjoy it. It's got a good mix of mythos, relationship drama, and campy humor, ( ... )

You can see a sharp adjustment in Elena's attitude towards Damon after he takes her to another state instead of the hospital after she has a carwreck. And did you catch where he actually joked about Caroline in the next-to-last ep? (Or was it the beginning of the last?) So, yeah. Only Bonnie is allowed to remember how bad he is, and I suspect that's the real reason fandom's hard on her.

I like that the witches are the most powerful characters, and hope it stays that way.

7. Jeremy Gilbert has finally taught me what Miracle Hate is. (Miracle Hate is when you think you hate a character as much as you possibly can, but then learn you were wrong.) Others have mentioned experiencing this phenomenon before, but I think this is the first time I’ve truly experienced it.

Oh, Jeremy. He is so boring and annoying and the show persists with this belief that he is interesting and we actually care.

The ONLY time I didn't want Jeremy off my screen was when he was channeling Bella Swann. And I actually still wanted him off my screen, but at least he was briefly entertaining.

Also, within 4 chapters of the first book, I've already noted that Elenas's sister is now a brother (who keeps having women die on him to add to his angst-THE WRITERS ADMIT TO THIS) and Bonnie is apparently a combination of two of Elena's friends, and they apparently thought the best way to make Caroline likable was to strip her of self-esteem. (I do appreciate that her low self-esteem seems to largely be because she's smart and knows how people see her, but it's aggravating to watch that and realize the writers probably thought that was the best way to make a blonde cheerleader more likable.)

FAIL.

This makes me want to write a TVD fanfic where all the men die. Except for Damon and Stefan, because I enjoy both of them muchly.

True. I feel like they needed to watch more Cordelia Chase and season 1 Gossip Girl before they wrote Caroline, because I see what they're trying to do with her but it's just not working for me.
