Hexwood is one of my favourite DWJ books (just look at my username and LJ title...) and one of the reasons is that I love the non-linear telling in it and how everything comes together in the end.

IIRC, DWJ was on the panel of judges for the World Fantasy Award the year before she wrote Tough Guide and got fed up with some of the clichés that kept cropping up in books.

Her books tend to avoid a lor of the cliches.
