The Incurable Matchmaker and A Chance Encounter by Mary Balogh

These are two older Regencies from the 80s, before Balogh switched to regular historicals. I usually prefer authors who make that switch pre-switch, but Balogh may be an exception. But that may be because I really dislike both plots, though Balogh has had other books where I liked the book despite typically disliking the plot.

I just read her older Lord Carew's Bride, and while I didn't love it, I really loved that she deliberately made her hero normal and not towering and alpha-male and instead turned the trope a bit by making that character the villain.

Yeah, that sounds more like what I expect from Balogh? I have that rerelease, actually, but haven't read it yet.

That second one would probably have me going "please punch him in the face... why aren't you punching him?" a lot.

I spent the whole book doing that, and I think you're typically more likely to wish physical harm on fictional males.
