Castle Season 1, Chuck Season 2

If ever I doubted that Nathan Fillon only ever really played one character (said character pretty much being Nathan Fillon) Castle would have removed that doubt. Thankfully, I rather like Nathan Fillon as he plays the same guy in new situations, over and over. Though I normally don’t like the character type?

Anyway, this series seems designed to ( Read more... )

Castle is lovely. The laughter at the concept of getting DNA results back the same week! The respect toward the victim's families! The lack of freaking serial numbers on pens tracking down the owner! The way they handle Castle's wealth -- he doesn't go for caviar or gold deely-boppers, more home laser tag sets and custom-made bulletproof vests.

I admit to its flaws. But if a show has a neat premise and doesn't make me want to punch the main character in the face, it'll take a lot more than this to drive me away.

One thing I particularly like is how Castle seems to almost be actively depressed when not talking to or about women, and not in an objectifying way, much as I roll my eyes at some bits. The guy just seriously likes being around women in any context. But then, his mother, despite not really being a good mother, is pretty much a force of nature, and his daughter is essentially raising him. (I have no idea how Alexis turned out so normal and well adjusted. Girl defies genetics.) Guy probably feels lost if a woman isn’t around, calling the shots in some context.

You know, this is very true! Interesting. What is your opinion on Alexis, by the way?

But heaven forbid Jeff, Lester and Morgan don’t get a plot each episode.

I know right? *rolls eyes*

I like Alexis a lot. In a "normal" TV family, she'd be irritatingly perfect, but with her family (though I think they have all tried to give her their interpretation of the word normal) turning out the way she did is kinda awesome, if a bit mystifying.

You know, I don't like Morgan, but I can tolerate him. He serves a purpose beyond sexist "comic relief," and has redeeming qualities. But Jeff and Lester? I feel like I'm actually being punished every time they're on screen.

Agreed.

I actually find Alexis quite delightful, and a very fun character to bounce off of Castle's personality.

That, and his reasons were that Chuck was too sweet and kindhearted and innocent to survive being a spy, which are typically the reasons used to keep women away from and ignorant of danger/secrets. I think this was also echoed by Jill's arc this season. Her reasons weren't as directly about protecting Chuck as Bryce's were (and she also, I think, had fewer choices than Bryce did, given that Fulcrum was already involved in her family'sliveswithout their knowing it) but it was there, and her lie is very reminiscent of dangerous men making delicate women hate them because it's "easier" for the delicate women. The scene where Chuck confronts her in the flashback is also very reminiscent of the season 1 flashback of Chuck contronting Bryce.

But then Bryce was largely presented as "dashing and hot love interest" when he came back, and annoyed me. And then was back to protecting delicate Cguck from the harsh world at the end, and it was OK again.
