Reaper and Dollhouse

Note:  I consider Dollhouse spoilers to be a public service.

So, I just watched the first episode of Reaper, and am deeply confused.  People actually willingly watch more than one episode of that?  On purpose?  That may have been the most singularly awful pilot episode of something that I've ever seen.  Then again, I tend to hate the Michael Myers/ ( Read more... )

Wait, I thought he punched her to knock her out because she was about to kill Echo or something? Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention to the scene.

I'm going by what I've been told, so I could be wrong. I'm not masochistic enough to watch and find out. Doesn't change the fact that the foundation for the "romance" was a man punching a disabled woman in the face.

No, that's right, she was trying to kill Echo. Next episode she punches him in the face for trying to trick her into fixing Caroline's wedge. And they are pretty cute, you know. He fangirls over her research papers, and thinks it's awesome she has a dead arm because it makes her like a hot female version of John Cassavetes from "The Fury".

And, considering that it happens in the 11th episode, killing her wasn't fridging- this isn't so Topher can angst, at any rate; it was because we cared about the character. Emotional manipulation, but not fridging. I think they killed her because someone had to die, and everyone else had shown up in "Epitaph" already, so their options were limited. It also fits in with The Big Reveal pretty well.

I don't particularly care what plot justifications they came up with for yet another reason to justify men abusing women.

Reaper got a bit better, although Sock was always an asshole waste of time and I kept wishing the lead character was Ben. They had a few subplots that really looked like they were going to go somewhere interesting-- my favorite being a gay couple who were adorable, sweater-wearing, goodie-cooking sweethearts...and also demons. Who were attempting to rebel against the Devil. And were a remarkably funny, fun, interesting addition to the show and so lasted something like four episodes. Le sigh.

I'm sure I had thoughts, but your icon derailed my brain. (Oh, John, why must you be so... outrageous/adorable/hot/awesome all at once?)

I love that icon so much.

I've only seen him in a few episodes in a show I hated where his character annoyed me, and I love that icon.

Though Barrowman in drag can't possibly compare to Denise.

Bones is lovely, and i'm rather sad that I got so sidetracked from it for so long.

Heh, there must be something in the water -- I've just started DVR-ing it for the last week or two now myself. (Alas, it's mostly a lukewarm case of like instead of love so far, because I keep wanting it to have more on the forensics and less on the interpersonal character stuff...I'm pretty meh about most of the main characters except Angela, who I utterly adore.)

The early seasons are IMO, much better-- more case-focused. Plus, Stephen Fry.

bb, why are you still reading Dollhouse spoilers? Are you turning into a masochist? :(

People keep saying it gets better.

Ahahahaaaaa. I've learned not to trust it when people say it about the show I loathe - I used to believe things like that and get inevitably disappointed.

The more I read Dollhouse spoilers (because I do too, out of a sort of sick curiousity), the more I realize that this is an idea that should have never been a TV show, or actually anything else outside of a disturbing rape fantasy story in Hustler.

I hear it and I investigate and then it turns out that "better" means "news ways to be worse."

Early on, DH at least had the potential to save itself, but instead it just sunk deeper and deeper into the worst parts. Sadly, it seems to have a brainwashing effect, given the numbers of people who buy into Topher's woobiness and the romantic pairings. (Even Sierra/Victor, the only one that isn't stomach churning, is based around her rapes and the fact that they don't actually KNOW each other in most ways.)

Chinese and Korean historical dramas. For wuxia, think of movies like Hero and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. But often with magic.
