Now I'm sure people weren't as picky about odors back then, but can you imagine the smell? A big old tub of urine (needs to be as deep as the iron is long), just sitting there waiting to be used and the smell as the heat of the iron boils some away. Like the worst outhouse you can imagine.

The one the program showed seemed to be narrow and deep but practicality suggests a tub would be more common.
