and now:  -

Kadir disappeared during the party, slinking off alone before anyone noticed.  Azre had offered to talk to him but Kain and Dick felt it best to speak to him themselves, he was their son now.  They found him not in his desk but back in Baxter’s Parquet Chest, the first sanctuary offered to him.  Sitting either side of the bed they spoke in turn, sharing the basics of what Azre had told them.  Kadir sat calmly throughout,  rocking gently with eyes lowered to something he held close to his heart.

He didn’t flinch when Dick reached out to him but sat still, stiff within the embrace.  Kain’s tentative stroke of his head and shoulders got a faint leaning towards the touch.  Lowering his hands Kadir surveyed his hidden prize.  Communicating with it on a secret level, comparing their past.

After time passed with silent patience, Kadir showed them this treasure.  A stained bunny that he glanced from to them.  He refused to let them touch it, holding it close when he lurched towards Dick falling into the man’s lap, his free arm tugging Kain close.

They held him long into the night.

Kadir spent more and more time visiting the bunny, the djinn’s found it would rest in whatever room the djinnling did.  They were careful not to comment and no one mocked the teenage djinn for his toy.  There started a number of whispered talks between Kain and Dick recollecting the early drama of Neony and his twick-tweet Pumpkin.  The bunny was grungy and stained, it didn’t smell pleasant and they knew it was a constant in their son’s night time bed.

Ceylen who would tease his brother in a heart beat never mentioned it.  He asked his father’s once if they knew where the original teddy was but let it lie at their shaken heads.  Dick overheard him another time offering to zap the bunny clean but Kaidr had refused, stubbornly hiding his inanimate friend from sight for several days after.

Kain decreed they should allow him to be.

The solution came by accident.  The Valance twins running through the office up to their usual high jinx, knocked bunny off the side table where he’d been propped.  Everyone froze waiting for the explosion.  Kadir simplycrumpled, sinking down next to the bunny as though in pain.  Midge got there before his protective fathers could sweep in and bundle him away.

‘I’ll make him better.  You just sit tight Kadir’

Kadir eyes pleaded, for once looked younger than his years.  Vulnerable.  Weak.  Kain and Dick standing next to each other fumbled blindly to clasp each others hands.  More than one eye dripped.

‘This ear, he’s injured!’

Kadir hugged himself tightly, enthralled by Midge’s doctoring.

‘How about we make him all better?’

Midge held up some gauze and a patch of pretty checked cotton, waiting for Kadir’s approval before treating  his patient.  Acting always as though the bunny was real, a pretence a younger Kadir had never fallen to, Midge carefully stitched and snipped until the bunny had a new mismatched ear.  A hint of power taking away the soiled cloth which he hid in tissues.

Eye’s followed his every move.  Face crumpling when Midge cleaned up the bunny, gentle hands careful of the patchy fur.  Dick and Kain came to stand behind Kadir, a hand on each of his shoulders in stoic support.  Ceylen appeared following an instinct, to smile at Kadir and ask ‘all better?’

Kadir gulped back tears and shook his head once but accepted back his friend, stroking the new ear with a smile painful to view.  Later that night came the first time that Kadir really cried.  Deep racking sobs as he clung to his family grieving.  Not all could be healed as easily as a stuffed bunny, but it was a good start.

He brightened over the next few days, surprising his fathers and brother with many a spontaneous hug.  Midge earning a big smile.  Also a new deluxe first aid box, complete with rather swish doctors coat,  courtesy of his grateful boss.

On the other side of town after a hard day tracking evil and pouring over a growing portfolio of horrors, Rowan let himself into his half furnished apartment.  Throwing down his bag he stripped on route to the shower, clothes discarded to the bin.  A deluge of scalding spray refused to wash away the scars.  Towelling dry with harsh frustrated strokes Rowan went past the kitchen snatching a hunk of bread and bite of cheese from the fridge.  Gnawing them as he went to his bedroom.

Slipping between clean white sheets he gave a deep sigh, comforted by the dim familiar room.  Tossing and turning, eyes screwed determinedly shut, sleep continued to evade him.  Reaching out past his alarm without flicking on the light or opening his eyes, Rowan felt for the bear that sat there.  Pulling the teddy close he nursed it to him, breathing the special scent that clung to it even now.  Hugging it close he finally sank into a deep and restful sleep.
