Title : Summoning
Wordcount : 817
Prompt : 56. Demon  -  9. Candle Wax
Container : Scroll (not very original)
Plot : Client Precedent

‘Here’

Eric stared blankly at his interviewer.  The smart suit did not lean to professionalism, he had clicked away at the keyboard before choking and pushing it away.  He’d continued to send the monitor sideways looks through the rest of the interview and was now handing Eric an old ratty manuscript.

Eric was a warlock in training, he had all the old smelly manuscripts he could cope with.  What he wanted was a date.  He was about to inform the man of this in no uncertain terms when a shy voice spoke up behind him.

‘This’ll help’

A candle!  How Lustful Liaisons gained a good reputation was beyond him.  Eric curled up the well read edition of MyMan in his hands and considered writing to the editors, if he didn’t get a full refund for his subscription he’d include a hex or two.

The boy glanced at the computer screen and scuttled off with a squeak, Eric was sure he didn’t want to know.  Clutching magazine, scroll and candle he stood poised to complain; his interviewer was already lost to the keys typing away frantically.  It wasn’t worth it.

A couple of long days and several brews later Eric decided to give the manuscript a try.  At best it would likely give the odd sparkle and at worst there was always the candle and his left hand.

The spell circle was fairly standard but some of the glyphs were fifth level and tricky to pin down.  His practice candles burnt out and Eric had to light the candle the agency provided by the time he’d finished chalking them all.  Black and stubby it wasn’t the type he’d choose to use but it flared up immediately, flame stuttering in a sudden draft.

There were sparkles.  Pink and red petal sparks that rained down before a clap of thunder shook the building.  Hellfire crackled along the chalked circle then chased up the walls causing the double density, reinforced, explosion proof windows to shatter.

Black smoke bellowed up from the void, rushing around in a furious cyclone.  A misshapen body forming in the calm eye.  It imploded with a bang, A tall demonic figure standing in the centre of the summoning circle.

It had a stern wicked visage, elongated fingers and clawed feet.  Skin a deep grey-blue and eyes glowing red flame.  Totally nude the demon showed off a chiselled physique and undeniably male genitalia.  His hair stuck everyway firing up around his ears.

Eric was relieved to know there were binding spells in the summoning circle to trap the demon in place.  Watching him flex his arms and seeing a prehensile tail lift wrap around his waist the demon looked thoroughly demonic.  The fact he had the power to retain humanoid form spoke of him belonging to a deeper layer than a mere apprentice should attempt to summon.

One large clawed foot slid forward, dusting off chalk at it exited the circle.  The rest of the body followed.  Eric gasped.

‘You can’t leave the circle’
‘I can’t?’ the voice was deep and gravely.  The demon made a point of looking down as he stepped further out of the circle.
‘The glyphs bind you’  Eric caught himself making futile shooing motions with his hands, putting them safely behind his back as he glared up at the demon.
‘You really should have looked up those glyphs, you know?’
‘But they’re binding?’
‘Completely’
‘So.  You can’t leave the circle!’
‘Evidently I can’ the demon flicked Eric’s chin to prove just how free he was.
‘How?’
‘The glyphs bind the summoner to the summoned.  You summoned me, and now we’re bound for life’
‘But?’
‘You’re mine for eternity. Bwah haha’ he sent Eric an expectant look.

‘Your’s?  But Lustful Liaisons promised me this was safe’
‘Those boys did promise they’d find me something tasty’  A long demon tongue licked up the side of his face, smiling with wicked affection.  Eric was to busy scrubbing the spit of his face to react when the demon struck out with a long arm to snatch up the scroll, dropping it on the open flame.  He cackled as it burned, hot wax splattering over the bare wooden floor.

‘I’ve been vanquished to that damn paper for eons.  Took a seeking heart to light the Wanton candle and free me’
‘You were vanquished?’
‘Some people have no sense of humour’
‘Wanton candle?’
‘It’s all about how you dip your wick!’

The demon proceeded to demonstrate to Eric all the best moves until the Wanton candle flickered out, reduced to a mere puddle of cooling wax.  Being bound to the demon for eternity didn’t seem like such a bad trade.

‘May I know your name then?’
‘Norman’
‘Norman the great scary demon?’
‘What of it?  Call me Bunny-ears and you’ll be laughing the other side of your face!’

Now he mentioned it, the ears were kind of cute.
