Plot : Party-time
Life was good. Lots of creatures had said really good things about him, some of them very unexpected. Oci was feeling the love. He’d not caught anyone eyeing his tentacles up, nor had anyone tried their luck. No one who didn’t already know precisely what he could do with those extra limbs that is, conveniently the exact same three who he was happy to remind.
Cnidaria had scoffed and informed him that he’d discovered a new rock that got his spear blade sharper than ever before. Most of what Cnidaria said sounded threatening so Oci dismissed it out of hand, so far this sunfall he had only got slaps for his troubles.
Oci had seen his Pearl socializing; chatting with his elder brother’s concubine Moonstar; a pretty Fae not normally away from his lovers side. To Oci they were practically brothers, but the creature was notoriously skittish and would flee on sighting him. Oci didn’t take it personal. True Saffir had selected Moonstar over Ocitaviar, but that only meant that Oci got to have Pearl. Saffir was very nice and very handsome, but he wasn’t Pearl. To Oci’s reckoning Moonstar lost out by not getting a Pearl of his own. He did seem happy with Saffir and Carral though, which was nice.
Crestal got set upon by the kingdom’s scholars; he’d already avoided most of the nosy councillors. Oci had had to do some fleeing himself when on his way over to help he’d heard one learned fellow ask after the natural mating habits of Sea Dragons. It didn’t help that Crestal had caught his eye, daring him to offer insights!
Oci would admit he liked meddling in mischief but even he didn’t truly, honestly, want to face the consequences of sauntering over there to tell the committee that actually, if Crestal was representative of the legendary species. Then what Dragon’s really liked to do, was watch! He had the most wicked mouth in existence; imaginative in wringing the last ounce of pleasure from a body before using that hum. That amazing hum, to demand more. Not to mention the torturously slow slide of hips and long narrow..
‘Oci? You look warm’ Pearl followed his backward gaze and snickered as he caught on ‘think we should go rescue him?’
‘NO’
‘Did they really just ask him whether Sea Dragons mate in both forms?’
The lovers shared a long wide eyed look and in one accord fled out of sight before their laughter exploded. Crestal was on his own.
They bumped physically into Cnidaria who’d seen them shoot across the court and come to investigate. Oci could have stopped the momentum but why halt mid wave when you could land on a nice, hot, hard body? Also, with arms out to catch the pair of them he had no way of reaching his spear, so Oci and Pearl indulged themselves with thank you kisses. There was a hint of teeth but Cnidaria got the both of them flushed.
‘Trouble’ He meant it as a question, not a judgement of Oci clearly; Oci beamed down at him and Pearl just to annoy.
‘Crestal, the scholars have him’ Pearl effected a scared shiver that managed to bring him even closer to Cnidaria.
‘Is he armed?’
Oci and Pearl shook their heads and Cnidaria dropped a kiss on to both their brows.
‘How bad?’
‘Very’
‘Positions were next!’
‘I’ll go help’ Choosing to stroll across the Ocean floor rather than swim, Cnidaria made no effort to rush.
Pearl’s younger brothers sailed past grabbing at them for anchor and to hide. A small school of Angel fish giving frantic chase. Their concubines were standing well out of the way, arms wrapped around each other as they watched their beloved twins shriek, splitting up in the hope of escape. Made Oci look quite sedate!
Overall the celebrations were going down a treat. The King had imbibed some Sea Berry Ale and got into the swing of things. There’d been a frisky Soul Fish bop and grind with the queen, a randomly declared holiday relating to coloured bubbles and royal decree for all hair to be dyed pink. Pearl’s mother had stuck a Canary canapé in his mouth as he shouted the order for all to take up arms for the hunt and vanquish of the giant Squid.
Squellie, the Squid in question, was the one who had handed her the plate. It was nice of Squellie to have dropped in, despite having to flick away the King a few times as he got bold and fighty.
She seemed far more relaxed since she’d moved away to the broken down Submarine. Oci couldn’t get out there to visit much, what with his new ambassador duties and playing in the harem. There were the odd human divers to petrify though, and she’d been quite flattered when one lot had returned to film her; there was even a hint of rouge to her cheeks in the following days.
Star fish were sprawled out all over the place. Several had been stepped on or tripped over. Oci gave one or two a tickle and would swear he heard a giggle every time they curled up to tight balls. Crustacean armies patrolled the beaches, claws clicking as they skittered through the shallow tide.
Sea Horses had unwound enough to dance in the breaking waves, a magnificent sight for all their narrow minded, churlish, bigotry. Crestal said he shouldn’t hold a grudge, giving Oci one of those looks, Pearl just gave him kisses. He preferred Pearl’s response. Didn’t quite share the joke with Cnidaria.
The gala event showed no signs of winding down and if the king was permitted to keep naming holidays it could well last the week. Reinforcements were joining in from all over, some Sea life Oci had never dreamt existed, let alone knew the origins of. There’d been murmurs of an Octa-family visiting and Oci had overheard Blowface from the council inform everyone in range that they couldn’t possibly be a match to their Octa-man, the old diehard didn’t even like Oci!
Pearl had really held forth on why Oci was far sweeter, far funnier, far cuter and far.. Something else that he hadn’t caught but that had got them all shifting in place blushing. This was all before the Groupers arrived, little festive bowler hats perched above their long narrow faces. Life was very good.
The sculpture had been a bit of a shock at first. The reason for the gala was vague some bridge collapsing or competition win. Oci though was guest of honour. It wasn’t everyday you put your head up through the waves and faced an eight foot tall sand sculpture of yourself!
Very well done too. It had the right number of tentacles, had captured his grin, even had pebbles pressed into it’s neck to show the habitual bite marks that decorated his throat. Harem marks of honour.
Crestal had claimed it must be because Oci was doing so well at his new job. Kingdom alliances were stronger than ever, as long as you overlooked those pesky Seahorses. Crestal though could be vague.
The other week Oci had been grumbling about that red Crab disappearing, the one that gave the better chase. It had turned up again running backwards of all things, three days later. Cnidaria had said that the large Crab made of live Coral that appeared on their path was the work of his people’s finest artisans. Oci still felt it mocked him, and Crestal had nodded sagely and talked of changing tides.
Then there was those Starfish! They’d been everywhere he turned, a full Asteroidea epidemic! Crestal had done some more knowing nods. Following that they’d vanished, migration? Crestal had leapt him before he got the query out and then Pearl had got involved and he’d not remembered anything else until after they had all reappeared. A whole family of reflective stars now tinkled around their home.
Deciding to go with the flow Oci sneaked back to the surface for another look at his image. It was very impressive and at least a little bit creepy. Cnidaria was there protecting Crestal from his would be fans, they were both staring considering at the sculpture and turned to face Oci with heated speculation.
‘Hey’
‘Oci’
‘Flotsam’
Oci took in what they’d been staring at and gaped. The previously accurate sculpture was now anatomically flattering. Not necessarily correct, but flattering. Very flattering. Oci swallowed and used a tentacle to close his jaw as he looked back to his lovers for answers.
‘I don’t think it’s quite accurate?’ Crestal was doing things with his voice again and Oci cast quick glances around them for onlookers.
‘It’s very. Happy’ Cnidaria was staring way to hard at him for comfort.
‘I think, the proportions may be a little off’
‘I’m not, no one could be that big!’
‘You should probably give the sculptors a few lessons in anatomy Oci’
‘For the greater good’
‘But..’ Oci cut himself off noticing for the first time how fine the cut of the new addition and the suspicious coating of sand on Cnidaria’s spear. Crestal’s hands were firmly hidden behind his back.
‘Do you think so? I mean I’d have to find them first’ he earned answering smirks.
‘Lot of work flotsam’
‘Perhaps instead, with suitable encouragement, you would, maybe?’
Oci squealed as they pounced him.

Pearl had moved from the crowds and found his way to the rock crevices when Moonstar approached him. He quickly turned blocking the view down to the cove.
‘Hey Pearl’ On land the Faeling’s voice was musical, clear bells on every word. Pearl looked on down the path in habit, but was surprised to find the shy fae on his own.
‘Saffir and Carral not with you?’
‘I wanted to speak to you’
‘You’re okay?’
‘Yes’ the smile brightened his face, an exhibit in more than okay. Wind howling behind him, Pearl shifting, herding Moonstar deeper from the cliffs edge.
‘You were nervous before Pearl’
‘Yes, I dreaded all of it’ Moonstar looked pleased he didn’t feign ignorance. When he’d been gifted with a harem Pearl had been pitiful in his self question.
‘They become you Pearl’
‘Thank you Moonstar. They’re.. my everything, precious’ Words didn’t carry as much meaning as his three Concubines but Moonstar appeared to understand.
‘Still feel awkward when they..?’
Moonstar trailed off. People tended to forget that on land his wings were for more than pretty decoration. Lifting off the ground to peer over Pearl’s shoulder was a mistake. It was clear he’d been hiding something but Moonstar hadn’t expected that, couldn’t have imagined it if he’d tried.
Answered his concern graphically. And explained Pearl’s high colour, and the hands clasped in a tight fidget below Pearl’s waist.
The howls had nothing to do with the winds. While the breeze did cut through the rocks with otherworldly intent, the cries came from the frenzied shoreline. Tentacles slashed out through the waters throwing water droplets far and wide. A spear stood proud in the sands, a warrior staking claim. The Dragon was a fine and vivid sight, rearing above the sand and seas, voice a low hum of contentment.
Saffir broke the tense silence with perfect timing, appearing around the jagged rocks full of concern for Moonstar’s flushed features. He shot his brother speaking looks as he bundled his dainty love in close, stroking through long strands of hair and demanding answers. Moonstar only blushed further unable to burnish the image of the beach below. He tugged at Saffir, sending a shy grin in the direction of Pearl’s ankles as he held firm, diving down to the blessed chill of the Lady Ocean where Carral’s open arms greeted them.
Surfacing with a splutter the three watched as Pearl climbed to a higher peak, streaking through the air and sea in a powerful arc, racing to the hidden cove. The other two looking on affectionately as Moonstar pinked and snickered.
