thought you'd find this interesting, Kali has been showing up (quite randomly) in my dreams and meditations, a lot, lately. So I think I've been 'claimed' by her (and her somewhat complicated requests for offerings of cow blood. asking for which at the butchers counter while wearing a pentagram necklace btw is a bad idea). I'd love to know your thoughts (should you feel like sharing), as I think you are the person I know with the most background in this area, my background is primarily indo-european, I'm a little out of my league.
Here's a couple of good links about Maa Kali symbolism! Cause it's easier then copying it all here. ;) It's hard to google good/accurate stuff on Kali though because she's SO misunderstood and misrepresented in the West.
Thanks for the links, they confirm very much the impression I was getting from her, so that is good. :) I have been getting very mixed reactions from my friends when I mention her, misunderstood is right.
With regards to the cow blood offering, could it be that she is asking for that specifically because it is sacred, and she wants an offering of something sacred? As I said, I don't know very much about the Hindu cosmology or practice, so that may be far off. I told her that blood may not be possible (at least with the ADF druid rituals blood offerings are a no-no), and she said honeyed milk would suffice instead. hmm....
oh, and there was this quote in that cow link, which is what makes me think that I may be on the right track. at least with the milk ;)
In the Mahabharata, we have Bhishma saying: "Cows represent sacrifice. Without them, there can be no sacrifice…Cows are guileless in their behaviour and from them flow sacrifices…and milk and curds and butter. Hence cows are sacred..."
My pleasure! And yes, sadly, Kali is *very* misunderstood. I look forward to working on the color version of that piece and see if I can't do her justice.
Milk, butter, ghee are all totally right on! :) Cow products- yes, blood/meat not so much.
I have to steal your icon : D I LOVE the Evil Overlord list. I've actually been wanting to make evil overlord icons for a while but haven't been able to yet.

Her making an appearance would, imho, have something to do with motherly love, the slaying of ego, and perhaps something to do with timing or time.
BUT, the cow blood thing baffles me. Cows are sacred, and the blood of a cow would not be an appropriate offering at all. http://hinduism.about.com/library/weekly/aa101800b.htm
