[Funny thing is, Takaya's never seen Chidori like this. At least, not for as long as he can remember. And even if she's a traitor, and poisoned by affection, and untrustworthy, and even though Takaya himself is less than empathetic to others...well, there's always going to be a small flicker of camaraderie there. You can't spend years upon years with someone and not form some sort of bond, as minimal as it may be. But what dwarfs that small ember of what might be concern is pure curiosity.]

Despair doesn't suit you. Emotion rarely does.

[Of course his tone of voice doesn't betray what isn't there - genuine concern, sympathy, kindness - he merely sounds vaguely interested. At least it isn't taunting. Really, there isn't much else for him to say at the moment; either she listens or hangs up on him. He's expecting either one about halfway.]

[He doesn't even know what he wants, and that's what's throwing him off so much. In Port Island, he wanted to live in the moment, until he found true meaning for his life. Then he wanted to take everything else in the world down with him. He wanted to die, with everyone else coming with him. But now he can't die - at least not permanently. He can't even take life permanently here. There really isn't a point in him anymore, and that's so very unsettling.]

I want meaning in this semi-godhood that I never requested. I want a reason to exist, if I am not allowed to cease. I want an explanation for why I am not allowed to simply die if there is no point in life but mere survival.

[in all her DESPAIR!, she's a little surprised he even gave her that much; for a moment, the divide she wrought between herself and the rest of Strega seems almost transparent. But it's even a little strange, seeing Takaya in this new landscape, this new environment where death-his domain-has changed shape completely]
