I think a House-Elf might be quite useful to have along -- especially a free House-Elf -- as they have a different and powerful brand of magic of their own and could do things wizards couldn't (like they can Apparate within Hogwarts, for example).
Hmm. You've given me another crackpot theory. Maybe they are in Hogwarts, in a room people can only get into by apparation and so requires a House Elf to get them there. I mean, if you're Helga Hufflepuff and you want to have a secret room with restricted entry, how do you test if a person is made of real Hufflepuff material? - By only letting those who have befriended those generally viewed as their inferior entrance.
Why Helga Hufflepuff would have a secret room and how this could possibly fit into the plot, I have no idea. Though it has to be on Hogwarts grounds, just to mess with Hermione.
