Sanctuary, The Hunger Games and Deadwood

I freaking loved the Sanctuary finale. Now that was a plan. The season as a whole has been rather flawed, but it did come together amazingly well in that episode. And just when I think that Helen Magnus cannot get any more awesome, she just gets more awesome ( Read more... )

I'd argue that Once Upon A Time is a fantasy western (because stranger with a past moves into town, winds up with a sheriff's badge and takes on corrupt mayor is a western plot).

:O This had not occurred to me.

The show doesn't exactly scream 'we've decided to do a western plot with Disney characters' so I do wonder if it's deliberate, or if it's just a coincidence. But it'd be cool if the season ended with a big show down in the main street.

I agree with not loving Deadwood exactly, although I think it's probably one of the most brilliant television shows ever created, certainly in the past decade--it was never going to be the kind of show that you loved to snuggle up with. It's gritty and uncomfortable and difficult, but I do think it's a feminist show; the violence and misogyny is difficult to watch at times, but it never feels voyeuristic or male gaze-y. /needs to do a rewatch.

Difficult is a good word to describe it. The plot is enthralling, but it never uplifts me and if anything leaves me depressed, and most of the characters do awful things, and the few characters that don't seem doomed by their circumstances or history. I really isn't a show that can really be loved. I also agree it's a feminist show. It really comes out batting for it's female characters, and I think it's the most detail I've seen any show or movie go into as to just how hard it was in that time and place for women, wealthy or poor, and shows us through the struggles of many really wonderfully written female characters.

I finally caught up on Sanctuary and yes, oh, yes, Magnus, you genius. (And I adore the Tesla-and-Henry show.) But I also sort of felt that the Homeland plot and the Magnus-and-her-secret-plans plot and the Will's-ambiguous-betrayal plot should have been the whole season, not just two episodes. So much could have been done there. But Damian Kindler's attention span doesn't appear to be able to tolerate long-term development. Alas.

And someone is going to have to explain to me in very clear terms why John Druitt hasn't been so much as mentioned since 'Tempus.' A crucially central character just disappears, and it's never explained? What?

But I'm a shallow girl. Give me Magnus in thigh holsters and I'll be happy.

Re Kindler's attention span I think the show's trying to find a balance between episodic and serialised, and not quite managing it. I'd prefer if it was more serialised, because the homeland plot in particular would have been really great done over the course of the season, but I've also seen other fans grumble because they don't like the plot arcs and just want it to be monster of the week ( ... )
