Quick Reviews of Movies

I have seen three movies in three days:

Tree of Life: If you know anything about this film, it will probably be that opinions are divided. I went with a party of four, two hated it, one loved it and I really liked it until the last 15 minutes when it went into symbolism overdrive and it lost me. It is a magnificently beautiful film. I was trying ( Read more... )

I admit, I will probably see the Avengers. I suppose it can't help being a product of the male-dominated comic book world, even though I don't think it is right that such a gender imbalance exists. But I think the idea of taking many movies and then mashing them all into one is a cool concept and I want to see how it is pulled off.

I enjoyed Captain America too. I was pretty noncommittal about it but found the WWII setting really sold it to me, plus it didn't drum in the 'American' patriotism as much as it could have which I immensely appreciated.

While comic books are male dominated, there are female members of the Avengers that they have chosen to leave out so I think it's more the male dominated world of actions movies and the idea that female superhero movies flop that's really behind the lack of women in the Avengers.

Still, if it gets rave reviews, I may be swayed to give it a chance. When you see it, you must let me know if it's good.

The WWII setting was a great idea, it's much fresher take on the superhero blockbuster.

I'm sure you're right! I don't have the comic book knowledge so didn't even know there were more female members of the Avengers that they chose to leave out.

I'll be sure to put something up on my LJ when it comes out.

I think setting the comic book in a realist setting grounds it so much more. Often comic book adaptions can come across as a bit fantastical if the film maker hasn't taken the trouble to make the setting/location as much part of the film. The Dark Knight = has made Gotham a very 'real' place. The Fantastic Four? Who really even remembers?? I think I felt far more partial to Captain America than Thor because of the grounding in history and location.

The the 'not my daughter, you bitch' felt tagged on for the fans and not the 'oh hell yeah' moment it should have been.

Same for me. It didn't have the whole build-up, with Bellatrix fighting Ginny and then taunting Molly about killing her children. Without that, it's awkward and meaningless.

Yes. And they really didn't give much time to show Molly's grief and losing Fred which also contributed to the moment.

Really, since reading Deathly Hallows, it is the moment from the books I have most desperately wanted to see on screen, and it disappointed.
