The King's Speech, Skins and Other Stuff

1. I finally saw The King's Speech. I kind of love how Colin Firth's career always comes to the inescapable Mr Darcy, because I found myself playing 'spot that Pride and Prejudice' actor, and holding my breath hoping he ended up in a scene with Elizabeth Bennet herself Jennifer Ehle (who was sporting a very good Aussie accent), and also there was ( Read more... )

television, the thick of it, skins, sports night, movies, the west wing

I'm so excited for Colin Firth. I think the Oscar's going to happen for him, and should it do so I will be thrilled. I liked the movie a lot. I don't know if it's Best Picture uniquely great, but it definitely one of the best I've seen from among the glossy, reverent biopic category. The thing that elevated it was all the performances, Colin and otherwise.

I'm rooting Toy Story 3 for best picture, though. It's just one of those generation defining movies (which is, oddly, what people have said about The Social Network). And not just the generation at this moment, but a generation's whole life so far, basically.

I would love for Toy Story 3 to win. I do believe it is the greatest movie trilogy of all time in terms of quality and would quite happily argue that Woody is just as complex and brilliantly realised a character as George VI or Zuckerberg, if not more so.

I always give up in advance though with Pixar films, though. They nearly always are the best movie of the year, but the animation category seems to specifically exist to stop the Oscars for ever having to give the award to them.

Still, I'd be happy if any of the nominated movies took it, except maybe Inception since I think it's a bit overrated, however, I'm happy a big sci-fi flick is in there with a chance. There's a good bunch of films nominated this year, not a Crash or a Million Dollar Baby in the bunch.

Woody is incredible. I was in the theatre, and watching that part where his little fluffy arms were flailing as he tried to climb the bathroom wall, and I realized that Woody is one of the great film characters (not just personally, but in terms of construction and development) of all time. And apparently Toy Story 3 in particular is the one people in the industry think has a chance at cracking that glass ceiling, and while I know I'm still possibly setting too much store in that hope, I can't help it.

What I also want is a Toy Story trilogy boxset that is not inflated to $100 by the inclusion of digital, blu-ray, and DVD formats of each. NOBODY NEEDS ALL THAT. WHY ARE YOU DELIBERATELY MAKING SOMETHING SO THAT IT WON'T BE BOUGHT.

He is incredible. I love how he can be petty and jealous and stubborn, and often is unsure of himself, but it so loyal and good natured and such a calm, patient leader of the other toys, and there's so many other things about him I wouldn't be able to begin to describe. He comes across as the amazing, natural breathing person who'd be a wonderful boss, and just a great guy. You just don't get many characters like that, certainly not as protagonists in blockbuster trilogy. And he's not even human, or even played by a human ( ... )

If you've only seen Robert De Niro in bad comedies you've obviously not seen enough movies to be a credible critic or even pseudo-blog-critic. I appreciate you qualifying your opinion with revealing your cinematic ignorance ( you've been told about De Niro) but, good Lord, he's one of Hollywood's elite... of ANY generation. Just an FYI: there were movies made before the year 2000. For example, go watch Casino, Good Fellas, Taxi Driver, The Untouchables...the list goes on. Hell, he even played a pretty darn good Frankenstein's monster.
I can't believe you haven't even accidentally seen a De Niro non-comedy. Sorry to come down on you like this, not that my opinion matters, but I'm just blown away by your cinematic ignorance.
Stop watching crap like Skins. That dribble is just an excuse for "road hard and hung up wet" girls to show, well, skin.
I agree on the King's Speech, great story and acting. Nice props to Ryan Reynolds as well.

Fair enough comment. The spelling mistake in his name is particularly unforgivable. However, I was turned 15 in 2000. Those movies you list are all ones I have to go back and watch on top of keeping up with current movies being released, and not being a fan of Mafia movies (of which three of those are), they've never been high up on my priority list of movies to catch up on ( ... )
