what is with the trend of breaking up a show mid season?

For American basic cable television shows, it's a way to avoid having to compete with network programing. The big four networks usually do not air new episodes in the summer and in December/January. Cable takes advantage of this gap in scheduling.

That's the theory, at least.

That makes sense. I wish Moffatt hadn't decided to use it for Doctor Who, though - waiting for new episodes is awful enough, but know that they are filmed and ready is like rubbing salt in the wound.
