TV Meme Day Twelve: The Runaway Bride

Day 12: An episode you've watched more than 5 timesI had to plan this one in advance, to avoid crossover with the favourite episode category. Really, there's probably multiple episodes of shows that I've seen over five times. Some Simpsons and Friends episodes certainly, because they're constantly repeated. But when it comes to deliberatly watching ( Read more... )

I agree with everything you said! I loved Donna in Runaway Bride! At the time, I did not get too attached, because I thought she'd only be around for the one episode. I was SOOO EXCITED when I heard she'd be back. I remember a lot of fandom being like "gee I dunno huff huff" but I knew it'd be great. And it was.

I was so excited as well upon hearing Donna would be back, I was saying before and during season three that she would have made an excellent proper Companion. Most of the fandom was having a fit, but it was fantastic news to me.

I think people didn't like Donna at first because they thought it was just Catherine Tate coming in and doing a version of one of her characters. Of course, it's much more than that, and it's evidently more than that when you go back and watch the episode again, but maybe people need the wider context to appreciate her? I don't know. Certainly by the end of the episode, I'd warmed to her a great deal. The creation of the Earth scene was wonderful & the bit where she says Lance deserved his death, then changed her mind. I thought she was so good in those scenes.

It is definitely one of the best Christmas eps, but -like you say- with the cybermen one and space Titanic .. bleugh, not hard. I quite like the Christmas Invasion, even though I'm not a great Rose fan. I think just because it's David's first episode.

I came into it having never seen Catherine Tate in anything else before in my life, so maybe that was why I was more receptive to the episode than a lot of people.

The Christmas Invasion is TRB's closest competition. After all, it's got Harriet Jones being awesome and the Lion King speach.

The rooftop scene! EEE! And the car chase. XD "I'm in my wedding dress!"/"...yes, you look lovely, now JUMP!" is tattooed on my memory.

Yeah, I found Ten amusing in s2, but I never got OMG HIIII DOCTOR <3 about him until after Rose left. I don't know if it's lack of her influence of them getting a better idea of characterizing him or both.

Not to mention the fantastic "Santa's a robot!"

I do think Ten became a bit better defined as a character after Rose left, or at least, less defined by their relationship. I dunno, season two is just problematic for characters in general, I loved season one Rose.

First, can I say how much I'm enjoying your answers to this meme? I'm loving all your West Wing and TTOI love.

Second, a million times this! I love this episode and for allt the reasons you give. It is amazing the chemistry between those two people developed in that one episode. The beginning of a brilliant partnership.

Wilf may have thought that Donna was better with the Doctor but for mine, the Doctor was vastly improved for having known Miss Noble.

Aww, thanks :)

One of the best things RTD did in his run was notice Tennant and Tate's chemistry and deciding to capitalise on it. They're one of my favourite partnerships of all time.

the Doctor was vastly improved for having known Miss Noble.

I totally agree. She brought out the best in him, and did let him get away with the worst. That's one of the main reasons why I love them so much, the complimented each other so well.
