Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this TV season) -
Misfits
This one is a surprisingly hard question as more often that not, I get into a television show until some time after the fact. Probably because I prefer being able to rent the show on DVD and watch it that way.
Anyway, I picked Misfits. I'm sure you all know it's Heroes meets Skins, and follows the misadventures of five teenagers who while doing community work, get caught up in a freak lightening storm and develop superpowers which reflect their insecurities. What's wonderful about it is that not only is the cast very talented (and I expect to see great things from all five on them in the future), the writing is wonderful and direction often inspired - it's also wonderfully dark and the comedy is very black, and that appeals to me.
But, as my answer to the last question also got at, I love shows when I love the characters, and the teens here are wonderfully complex. They're introduced as conforming to the stereotypes and the personas they've created for themselves and/or society has created for them, but the show slowly and with an incredibly light hand, reveals who these five really are by showing their deepest insecurities. And it never forgets that they're teenagers, and that they make mistakes and do stupid things they regret, and they haven't quite got the emotional maturity to deal with the stuff they have to deal with.
I'm really looking forward to the second series.
