Studying without notecards?

How did you remember and study 1500 page books like pathology and pharmacology?

Is there a way to remember all this info, long-term, WITHOUT making notecards?

I hate making notecards and never used them when I took anatomy and physiology. I typed outlines of the chapter. But that normally takes a huge amount of time.

What do you find the most effective study methods for REALLY learning (long-term memory, not just short-term cramming) 1500 pages of facts? I have time now and really want to learn subjects like pharmacology on my own. But I hate notecards and am trying to figure out a good alternative study system. Thanks.
