It's an odd feeling, I am sitting in a relatively safe corner of the world (we have had 103 deaths, which is tragic but compared to most countries... and the curve seems to be flattening) and while the economy crisis is worrying, I'm cushioned by circumstances and pure luck. I do worry about people I care about elsewhere though, even people I don't know but am a fan of...

Because what worked for Australia and New Zealand probably wouldn;t have worked elsewhere anyway, so any feelings of complacence have to be stamped on.

Sometimes it helps to be a literal island. But now the question is how long will we have to remain an island. NZ is basically self-isolating from the world right now. For a country dependent on international tourism and international students, though...

I know! I'm from Australia and just went on extended leave, leading to retirement, from a University that like all ours depends on international students for a huge injection of funds. They are, I hear from ex-workmates, talking job cuts, less courses and teaching resources, even pay cuts...
