It caught my eye because there had been a film called "Svengali", and I hadn't known the title actually meant something, I'd assumed it was the last name of the main character or the name of the place.

(not seen the film, but some good-looking actors in it; it's on YouTube)

Well... the book Trilby is named after the protagonist, and the film Svengali that's based on it is named after the antagonist - presumably because his name is more exotic-sounding. I never saw the film, but I read the book in college - it was okay, but not great. Here's an interesting article about it:

Thanks for the link! Shall check out the article. I didn't know the book was based on the film...

I'd not seen the film either, I heard about it b/c of the 3-min part of this actor, I believe his part was even uncredited b/c it's so short:

Yay, Jeremy Brett as a callow youth! Now I kind of want to watch the whole film, even though he isn't in the rest of it.

Hee hee ;)

If you haven't yet seen them, I can highly recommend "Number 10: Bloodlines", "The Prodigal Daughter" (each of those is under one hour long) and "On Approval" ;)

(can find the YouTube links if you'd like, let me know)
