Supporting the Community (or Feeding my book obsession)

We stopped off at AfterStonewall this afternoon and I did my best to support the local LGBT bookstore. :) The fact that they had several copies of Haunted Hearths on the shelf made me even more eager to support the store. I wasn't looking for anything in particular (and forgot to bring a list of authors books I've been keeping an eye out for - it ( Read more... )

Heh - I've heard that "Claire of the Moon" came to be called "Clear the Room" after some intense discussions in various lesbian spaces. I found it believable, but of course it doesn't show the whole truth about lesbian life. I don't think any one book or movie could do that.

I found it monotonous and at times pretentious. I also didn't like Go Fish. :)

But now I do.

I did read Desert of the Heart, but I admit I liked the movie better. I saw that first, so that may have something to do with it. My favorite Jane Rule is Memory Board, and a collection of short stories/essays whose title escapes me at the moment.

And really, Helen Shaver? It was the other one for me ;)

And do tell about The IHOP Papers. Have hear good things about it too, and don't recall where as well ;)

And do tell about the Marianne K. Martin. Must have been someone on the lesfic group who mentioned her ;) The blurbs sound so horribly cheesy that I'm shying away from her books, but then, I know blurbs don't always represent what's in a book.

Still haven't gotten around to the Devil series...

Something about Helen Shaver - perhaps her voice. I also had a thing for Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway/Voyager). I rather liked both characters in Desert Heart, but I've seen her in other movies/shows so she's stayed with me longer ( ... )

Are the IHOP papers crappily written or just too dark for your current escapist mood? Not that your description really make sme run out and buy it asap ;)

I've since packed the book (unfinished) so I won't have a chance to finish it until after Easter.

It isn't a dense book - I read probably 75% of it in one sitting. I'd have to review it to figure out if it is crappily written or just has no redeemable characters and is so far outside of my frame of reference that I can't connect to it. I do enjoy dark/bleak books - but this one didn't grab me.

See if you can borrow it - I don't know that buying it would be a great investment.
