Thanks, Mithluin. Yes, Raoul lived more years than most pets we've owned, and they were very good years. He enjoyed us, and we *definitely* enjoyed him! And when he got sick with cancer he declined quickly. He wasn't sick with chronic illnesses for months or years, as is the case with some cats (and people).
And thanks for commenting on Frodo and Sam. In that pose--in that scene--they look as brave as their book counterparts!
Yes, he did have a good life. We were so lucky to share it with him. And, yes, it was the right thing. He had spent the previous month in decline, not in pain or miserable, but weaker and weaker. But the day before June 19, he threw up his breakfast, tiny as it was, which really wore him out (his cancer seemed to have spread to his lungs by then). Then during the day he just seemed less content and more uncomfortable. On June 19 he slept on the chair and on his little bed as usual, but fitfully, not really falling asleep. Our other two cats that died of cancer were like that, too. Not really complaining, but obviously having discomfort or they would have fallen asleep easily, weak as they were. Then, trying to move his bowels, the effort made him wretch violently, twice. He looked so stressed and exhausted after two bouts of that, I called up, and my favourite vet said we could come that evening after her last appointment, but she'd be away the next few days. That decided me. I wanted it to be her. She was the vet who

I just wrote a full reply to Maeglian, Maewyn, about taking Raoul to the vets and making the decision. I didn't want to rush it, but I didn't want to wait until he was in acute distress. It was the day before we brought him in that he began to look as though he was ready to go. He'd been very tired before, but content to sit in the sun or in his bed with the others. He lost his contented look the day before, never really relaxing. He was never a complainer, so I figured this meant that he no longer could get comfortable or relax. I hated to think of him getting like that.
Wasn't that a great little photo story? Until I looked through it, I hadn't realised how posable they were, or how good their costume pieces were under the cloaks and coats.
Thanks, Shirebound. Yes, he was a stout-hearted cat. A Gryffindor of the cat world. Pixie nibbled a little bit of wet food today, but she's making me worried. (But what's new? *wry smile of pet owners*) (your puppy icon is very dear, by the way)
