I'm of on holiday! June 24 - July 9

Jun 23, 2005 09:00

I just wanted you to know that while my spouse stays home to hold the fort, I am taking our daughter to visit family (in Wash., D.C. and in northern California; we live in the middle, in northern Minnesota). We fly off tomorrow.

Here's the fellowship leaving Rivendell; I hope Frodo is coming with me on holiday, dearest darlingest figment of my ( Read more... )

Have a really fun vacation! I will miss you, too. I hope you enjoy your time, and that you and Frodo spend a little quality time now that you won't have so many gabby broads chiming in. ;) Bon voyage!

Thank you, Mariole.

Seriously, I hope I do have a chance to do some planning and thinking, story-wise; it has been so hectic. But I don't have my story printed out (waste of paper, since I tend to tweak the whole thing every time I post a new chapter - another reason my writing takes so long; if Tolkien had had a computer, LotR would never have been finished).

But I've pored over it so many times, I have a lot of it imprinted in my mind, anyway.

I have a friend who's been trying to get me to print my story forever. Just that act gives it a permanence and reality that is valuable. And looking is different from thinking about it. I think that will be a useful tool.

I hope Frodo follows you happily and persistently on all your travels. Cheers!

Enjoy the change of scenery, Mechtild, and I think it might be beneficial if you try not to think about your story too much. If you let it lie fallow in your mind for a while you might find vigorous green shoots thrusting their way through the soil when you get back to it ... well, I think I let that metaphor carry me away. lol.

I just had an exciting thought: you know I'm newly into bookbinding: how cool would it be to print and bind 'Threshold' when it's finally finished? I feel a little faint at the thought of all that ink and paper, but ... wouldn't you love to hold it all in your hands and see it sitting on your bookshelf?

Ann, you live in D.C.? My mother lives in Springfield, VA, about 12 miles out. I think it would be cool to meet for lunch or something, but I have my daughter to entertain (she wants to go every day to the nearby wave pool) and my mother is extremely jealous of my time when I am there, seeing us so infrequently, so I can't promise. We leave for CA from D.C. for a trip-within-a-trip early on June 30, returning late July 5.

I will email my mother's phone number to you, just in case.

Now about hobbit-porn.... mechtild June 24 2005, 12:20:29 UTC
Oh, Pearl, that was a lovely painting; you're right, that's not a typical depiction of a satyr at all. Byrne Jones did a sympathetic one of Pan comforting the grieving Psyche. Oh, and yes, Northern California is very beautiful.

Now, about porn. I wasn't against "hobbit porn", per se; I even said I enjoyed their merry pranks!

I have thought about it all day, and decided that what makes me like any Frodo fic the most is that it in some way enhances my love for Frodo and LotR. But when a fic (gen or smutty, but especially smutty) portrays Frodo (or the other beloved characters) in what I think of as a seriously false and unflattering light, I just don't like it, even if I am titillated by it while reading itI love to tease Frodo, as your know, and see him sported with in fics, but it must be clear in the fic that it sees him with an affectionate, loving eye -- that no matter what he is being put through as a character (for our pleasure, usually *grin*), the fic still most of all wishes him honour and happiness. To see Frodo made into ( ... )

I know you have probably already gone, so I will just say I hope you have a really good time on your vacation, both East and West...
Just keep a tight rein on that Muse-Frodo, and keep him out of mischief....(a tough job, I know, but someone will have to do it, lest he become uncontrollable....Oh no, an uncontrollable Frodo...the mind boggles !!! )
