And I agree with you completely regarding this scene. It makes me cringe to watch it.
Elijah... is, as you so rightly say, not only magnificent, but an eloquent and dignified reminder of the message that is 'supposed' to be conveyed in this scene.
PS. I miss Sam's presence.

Yes, it's a shame they did what they did with the temptation scene, but, ah, well. There have been such well-known illustrations of Galadriel holding that ring aloft, and P.J. was so fond of memorable illustrations, you'd think just that would have steered him into a book-like scene. But I think he was just too worried the Glade scene would be too talky.
