One thing I thought was interesting about Batman: TAS was the fact that Batman is such an iconic character, that there isn't a banner in the opening. Just seeing Batman in profile, you know who he is. I remember Wizard Comic Guide did this thing about the 10 best Superhero costumes and Batman came in 2nd to Spiderman for just this reason: You can just see the outline of Batman and you know who it is.
To this day, I think the Batman: TAS Alfred is by far the best rendition of the character, Mark Hamil's Joker is pretty much the definitive version of that style of the Joker and Batman: MotP is still probably my favorite Batman movie ever.

I don't remember the criteria of how they came up with it. For my money, I like the fact that Frank Miller pointed out why a character with a almost totally dark costume would want a bright icon on his chest. I think the line, "I can't armor my head" was probably one of the best 'retcon' pieces ever. Makes tactical sense to draw your enemies fire to your most armor point as well making Batman look that much smarter.
