book reviews, an ongoing series

I've tried like three times this past week to sit down and review, but I think the problem is I read some heavier stuff this go-round and the thought of thinking was just not appealing. But I promised myself I would read Harry Potter after I got this next set reviewed, so here I go. Apologies in advance if I end up giving some of these short ( Read more... )

Yeah, I really, really tried to get something out of it, but apart from the generic positivity that I mentioned above, it just wasn't happening.

You wrote a more fair review of My Gender Workbook than I was ever able to. My only reaction was pretty much "Nyaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..!" Some kind of primal scream that died into a snarl followed by much gnashing of the teeth. I think it was the "OMGZ U guys! and girls and gender-neutral beings and others! I R going 2 talk lyke a horrible caricature of a mIdDLe SkOoL gUrL and when I write ::SMILE:: it means I am SMILING at U!!!!!!!!eleventy11"

Yes. That was pretty much my only coherent reaction to the book.

...I don't particularly want it back, but I'll take it if only because I wouldn't want you to feel obligated to hang onto it. I'll just pass it on to someone else -- because, although I agree with the line from your review that I quoted above, the book apparently does mean something to some people. Or, if you know someone who might want it, I encourage you to give it to them!

Okay, no pressure then. I'll hunt for someone to dump it on! I think she writes like that b/c she actually IS like that. Which, you know, scary.

I just couldn't get into it. I might go back and try The Virgin Suicides at your recommendation, but it won't be for a while b/c I've got a huge to-read list of stuff that's already in the house (every time I say no more buying until I catch up, I end up breaking my vow).

I think the reason The Handmaid's Tale was most relevant to me is b/c I have a near-pathological fear of pregnancy.
