Poll

ETA: I did end up leaving a comment, but it was quite short and considerably nicer than the one I wrote originally. I just said that I thought it wasn't very well written, I had to read it six times to get the point, and that I have more detailed criticisms if he's interested.

I thought that was fairly worded. y/n?

fancying myself a writer

There's a guy who writes an outdoor blog, and he's thoughtful but also a philosophy major so he can tend towards the pretentious. That may be a slight understatement. And he wrote a post about "a moral framework for lightweight backpacking and outdoor recreation," which is bad enough in itself, but the post! The post was a mishmashed mess of 3 dollar words and unsupported assumptions, declarations, and condemnations. Not to mention referencing Nietszche in a way that makes me unsure if he really thinks there is only one correct philosophical approach to taking a freaking walk in the woods, or if he's just being incredibly sloppy and assuming no one will take the reference for more than face value. First I was offended by the former possibility, then the second. I went to write a rebuttal and then realized I didn't have anything to rebut b/c I'm not sure, beyond a general idea, what he was even trying to say. Like I said, his blog is fairly popular and he's well-respected in his circles...I feel like passing this stuff off as a ( ... )

I would look at my motives and ascertain why I wanted to address it. If my motivation was clear and honorable and I felt my feedback would/could be heard and it would be productive, then I would send an email. Writer to writer. Otherwise, I would just leave it be.

Well I like the guy, he's thoughtful even if I don't always agree with him, and a few months ago he had his 2nd blogversary and specifically asked for feedback even if it was harsh. So I imagine he's open to criticism, given it's actually criticism and not me lashing out. The post did touch a sore spot, and I initially started writing a response from that, but when I was in a better emotional place I went over it more soberly and it is, honestly, poorly-written. I think some of my emotion from earlier came from disagreeing with the post, wanting to write a refutation, and being frustrated b/c it was such a mish mash there wasn't anything for me to directly refute.

That said, knowing I am comprised of about sixty five to seventy percent righteous asshole-ness... I apply the golden rule of: If I don't have anything nice to say, keep my mouth shut (and my hands off the keyboard). And if I am not directly asked for my feedback and or advice, I one hundred percent keep my opinion to myself. Unless of course someone is literally about to walk into the path of a car, then I would never miss the chance to be a hero. That's my going out plan btw.. saving some old lady or baby from certain death by runaway car or something else dramatic like that.
