I wish I had an anemometer. The weather station says winds at 17 mph, but they're sustained at at least 20, gusting at at least in the high 20s.

Wait, wait. I checked a different station that has sustained at 23, gusts to 32. That sounds more like it.

Somehow I became a weather nerd. When did that happen?

iowa shucks

You really can't live in Iowa for a number of years without becoming a weather nerd. Weather: it's what we have instead of entertainment.

Also a glacier nerd. Every Iowan can tell you how glaciers originating in what is now Canada carved out the upper Midwest and terminated south of what is now Des Moines, giving Minnesota its lakes and Iowa its uber-rich topsoil. And uranium and radon. I didn't care about geology / earth science at all until I moved here! Now I... still don't know how much I care, but somehow I know more about it! (Actually, being a naturalized Iowan i.e. having given in to the fact that I am now as much an Iowan as I am a Southern Californian, I *do* find earth science fascinating.)

My mom still does sit and watch the Weather Channel for fun. Of course now that they have actual programming instead of forecasts in a loop, it's not as funny. But yes. All I need anymore for entertainment is a window.
