The subject line contains some of the items I encountered while volunteering with Cumberland River Compact Saturday morning (Station Camp Creek cleanup). The bones may have been those of a large dog or a small deer.

Being blown that far off-course sounds scary! Glad you had your phone and were in an area urban enough to be served by Lyft.

It was actually really fun until I took a break about three hours in and, when I checked my phone on shore, realized that there was an uncomfortably real chance of me being stuck outdoors until the next morning (with a phone with < 50% battery left). And, because I'd originally planned to be on the water for just an hour (but then kept going because it was so nice...), I'd left my headlamp and lantern in the car on purpose.

I'm looking into getting a marine VHF radio. Any advice?

We have walkie-talkies that are made for use on the water. But that only works if you have someone else around close enough to get your signal (if we’re both on the lake or one of us is in the house there, it’s less than a mile.).

So I don’t know much about VHF radios. If you’re in an area where you get a phone signal, though, I’m not sure what it would get you that your phone doesn’t - and it would be one more thing to charge. You could always carry a phone charge bank in a dry bag.
