This fanfic is a collaboration with yashirai.

Main Characters: Jinguji Yuta, Nagase Ren, Kageyama Rin(OC), and Sato Mari (OC)
Genre: school life, fluff, romance, friendship

Note: Let’s assume that they are all in the same age. So in this story they are all 18 years old. J

There was only a day left before the summer festival. Everyone was busy preparing for it. Shopping districts were full of people looking for the perfect yukata. Food and game stalls participating in the event were already being put up one by one. And finally, decorations of various kinds were lined up in every nook of the park.

Jinguji and Ren were playing video games at home when Ren suddenly remembered something. "AHH!" Ren shouted while holding on to Jinguji's shoulders. Jinguji paused the game and asked, "What is it???"

Ren crossed his arms and tilted his head. "You know, the day Mari called to tell you about her plan... Remember that?"

Jinguji nodded. "What about it?"

"Well, that time I kinda gave a hint to her that I'm interested to know more about her. And I said sorry for suddenly kissing her that night..." Ren didn't notice that he was telling Jinguji something that shouldn't have been said bluntly so before he could finish, as expected, Jinguji was shocked to know those details. "Wait what? You kissed her?!" Jinguji looked at him angrily.

"Wait wait! I kissed her on the cheeks not on the lips! Don't get mad Yuta!" Ren was trying to calm Jinguji down.

"But still! Why'd you do that?? You just met at that time bro!" Jinguji didn't calm down and was about to grip Ren's collar but then he managed to control his anger. "Hey, are you sure about Mari? I mean... I don't want her to be like your previous girlfriends."

"Oii don't say it like I'm a bad guy Yuta! I know doing that was wrong. I don't know why I did that too. It...it just happened! Ugh that's why I was so worried sick if she would be mad!" Ren laid his back on the couch. "And plus, don't make it sound like I was bad with my previous girlfriends! My past 2 relationships didn't do well because we were too young at that time."

"Fine, but I just want to confirm. Are you serious about Mari? Because if you're not, I'll really deal with you Ren!" Jinguji said.

"Yes yes Yuta I'm serious! I promise! I’ll properly court her! But that's the thing, even if I try to get to know to her so we can become close, there's still a gap. I can't explain it aaargh!" Ren scratched his head.

"Bull's eye!" Jinguji pointed at Ren.

"Huh?" Ren confusingly asked.

"She's like that. The moment you get closer with her, that's the time she'll put up some kind of shield. It's like... even if the guy likes her or not, and even if she likes you as a friend or as more than that, she'll still choose to put a gap." Jinguji explained and shrugged.

".... Wait Yuta.... Why do you know that? Don't tell me, you had a first-hand experience already?! Did Mari reject you??" Ren must have been out of his mind to have asked those questions.

"Ha?" Jinguji hit Ren's head. "Idiot! Rin is the only one for me!! Get yourself together! I just know because I've seen her do that not just to guys but also to girls." Jinguji laughed.

Ren stood up. "So does this mean that she hasn't been in a relationship before?"

Jinguji nodded. "Yeah, she keeps on saying that she doesn't need a boyfriend since she has her pianist idol who doesn't even know she exists!!" He rolled his eyes and sighed. "But don't worry Ren, you seem to be in the right path. You're the only guy who has gotten this close to Mari! Besides me of course," Jinguji winked, "To think that you're still not that close right? Hahahah!" He flashed a thumbs up.

Ren shoved Jinguji's hand, "are you complimenting me or are you teasing me?" He lightly banged his head on the table and stared at it.

Jinguji got the game controller. "Come on, don't think too much. I'm sure you'll open her heart, Ren! You're my ikemen and ultra gentleman cousin after all! Tsk let's continue the game already!"

Meanwhile, Rin and Mari were having their girls only bonding. They went shopping and food tripping. They stopped by a small cake shop that Rin loved going to. *cough* *cough* Mari held her chest and instantly reached for the water. "Are you okay, Mari?" Rin worriedly asked. Mari gulped down her drink. "Yeah I'm okay no worries!" Rin laughed, "Looks like someone's talking about you hahahaha!" Mari frowned jokingly and laughed.

"Ahh~ I'm so excited for tomorrow!" Rin exclaimed.

"Me too! I'm excited to see you play kingyo sukui! Hahahaha" Mari replied.

"Ehhh~ you'll see Mari, I'll get one this time hahaha!" Rin did a peace sign.

It was getting dark. People couldn't wait for the next day to come. Some people even had a sleepless night including Jinguji, Ren, Mari, and Rin. Thankfully, they could still have enough sleep since the highlights of the summer festival happens at night too.

*ring ring* *ring ring* *ring ring* Rin turned off her alarm clock. "It's finally today! Mari, wake up! Let's prepare for later~" Apparently, Mari and Rin had a sleepover the night before which caused them to sleep late. "What time is it?" Mari mumbled. "It's already 9am Mariiii" Rin pulled her. "Waiiit, 30 more minutes please." Mari begged. "Oh fine fine! Hahaha you really are a sleepy head. I'll just help mom make breakfast and call you later." Rin patted Mari's head.

Rin went out of her room. "Moooom," she called. "Rin, come here with Mari. Breakfast is ready!~" her mom answered. "Aww thanks mom! Hehe! Mari's still asleep. I'll call her in a while. Oh and mom, please help us in preparing our look for later!" Rin looked at her mom with sparkling eyes. Her mom smiled and caressed her hair. "Of course! I'll make you two very very pretty! Hmm wait," her mom's smile got bigger, "why are you so eager in dressing up for the festival? Don't tell me you have a date? Hahaha." Rin's eyes widened. She didn't have an official date, but she thought of Jinguji when her mom mentioned about having a date. Rin defensively shook her head, "no, I don't have a date! I'll be with Mari, Ren, and Jinguji only." Her mom paused for a while and then grinned, "heeeh~ so you'll be with Jinguji? That's good that's good." Rin pouted, "m-mom!"

Rin was unsure whether she had feelings for Jinguji or not. She wanted to talk about it with Mari but she's too embarrassed to do so. All she knew was that she was happy being with Jinguji. However, something changed in their 2nd year of high school. Her heart ached whenever she saw Jinguji with other girls. Well look at that! She was experiencing the same situation as Jinguji after all! Rin was just a bit late compared to Jinguji on realizing their feelings for each other.

"Good morning!" Mari finally woke up. "Oh, good morning Mari-chan! Come here and eat with us." Rin's dad invited her. "Thank you for always taking care of me auntie and uncle!" Mari hugged them. "Don't worry! You're like a daughter to us and a sister to Rin." Rin's mom held Mari's hand. Mari was touched. She smiled but her eyes showed sadness.

Mari's parents were actually living in another country because of their business. Although they went home during holidays and during Mari's birthday, there were times when Mari celebrated her birthdays alone. That's why Mari frequently visited Rin's home. This was also the reason why she avoided being too close with other people. She was afraid that they too would someday leave her.

Before meeting Jinguji and Rin, Mari was always alone. She had friends but her relationship with them weren't that close. In middle school, Jinguji and Rin became her classmates. Both of them noticed that Mari was cheerful and friendly but she was reluctant to have deeper a friendship with others so they decided to try to befriend her. At first, their plan resulted to a failure, but they didn't give up and gradually opened Mari's heart towards them. Mari's relationship with other people improved, but the only people that she fully let in her life were Rin and Jinguji.

It was 4 in the afternoon. Rin and Mari were geting ready for the summer festival. With the help of Rin's mom, they wore their respective outfits. Rin's mom placed beautiful hair-clips on both of them. "Waaa! You two look so blooming!" Rin's mom clapped her hands. Mari and Rin looked at their reflections on the mirror. They smiled at each other and embraced Rin's mom. "Aww! Thank you mom!" Rin exclaimed. "Super super super thank you auntie!" Mari exclaimed too.

On the other hand, Jinguji and Ren were walking to Rin's house to pick up the two girls. On the way there, Jinguji was doing breathing exercises. *whoo!* *whoo!* He waved his hands in the air. "Hahaha! Yuta, you're the one who said I shouldn't think too much. But look at you! You're more nervous than I am!" Ren laughed. Jinguji didn't mind him and still did his so called 'good luck routine'. Ren chuckled again and shook his head, "good luck later bro!"

*ding dong* Ren pressed the doorbell. "Haaai," Rin's dad opened the door. "Ah good evening uncle," the boys greeted. "Oh here you are! You two look handsome! Come in come in. Rin and Mari are waiting for you inside." Rin's dad said.

When the boys reached the living room, they saw the girls all dressed up. Jinguji's and Ren's eyes widened with amazement. They were stunned for a few seconds and then finally smiled. "Oi oi, don't stare too much!" Rin's dad lightly slapped Jinguji and Ren on their backs. "H-hai," they both answered still looking at the girls. "They look very pretty, right boys?" Rin's mom teased them. Jinguji and Ren nodded and blushed.

"Well, shall we go?" Mari asked. Rin's dad put his arms around the boys' shoulders and said, "Just make sure to take them home on time okay? Hahaha"

Rin's mom suddenly ran towards the cabinet and searched for the camera. "Let's take a picture of the four of you! This will be a great remembrance." The four compressed together and posed for the picture. After taking a few more photos, they all looked at the outcome. "Ahh~ I hope we could go together next year too!" Rin said with joy.

"Saa, you guys go now or you'll be late!" Rin's dad said. "Enjoy!" Rin's parents waved at them while the four waved back too.

The four were walking happily on the way to the festival. You could see the excitement in their eyes. No matter how happy they were while chatting, Jinguji also felt very nervous as this was the day that might have changed his life. However, he didn't let his uneasiness get in the way with his bonding with his friends especially with Rin. Things were also going smoothly with Mari and Ren. They were cheerfully talking with each other.

The four of them were nearing the venue. It was just one cross road ahead. They all ran towards the cross road. Jinguji was having so much fun that he didn't notice the walking signal turn red. *beeeep* He faced his right side. All he saw was the bright light coming from the car. His memories with his family, friends, and Rin flashed before his eyes. He thought, 'is this the end of the line for me? Won't I be able to say my true feelings for the person I love until the end after all?'

"JINGUJIII!"

"YUTAAA!!"

*thud!!* A loud sound seemed to have enveloped that cross road. The crowd looked at what had just happened. Jinguji's vision blurred. The last thing he heard was Rin's crying voice, "Ji-jinguji! Stay with me! Wake up!"

Yaaaay! Chapter 5 is finished!! :D
