If the American Way is an ideal, then that doesn't mean that it occured at some point, only that it was at some point a goal or a dream. Therefore, it can be liberty and freedom and opportunity, and all the rest, even in this day and age.

here's the thing, the american way stereotyped by superman and the conservative party have been dead for a long while. the american way is more now a symbolic representation of what we believe we stand for. it's what we take pride in without understanding what it's for. the american way is relative, much like many things, in that we can define it by french standards (slovenly, disgusting americans) or by mexican (the heralds of opportunity) or by biased, american standards (stong, independent, powerful.) it's a WWII draft board poster with a perspirant, white (this is not a racist remark, i just feel this is what conservatism defined as the american way) construction worker giving the thumbs up.
to put it simply, the american way has been adultered. not impurified, as some would have you believe, but it's now not defined by a definitive stereotype.
