“So when did you know?”

Sylar’s eyebrows went up and held there, giving his companion a dubious look. “When I knew I was…evil? Special?” Honestly, he ran out of things he might have possibly realized about himself.

“When did you know you liked men?” Peter finally voiced it, patiently but obviously with care.

Sylar went still. He stared at the nurse. His mind tripped over itself as to how Peter had come to that conclusion and what Peter opinion was or why he cared. Then he tried to untangle the truth. Did he like men? That was harder to say or formulate even to himself. It was…complicated. “Who said I ever found out?”

Now it was Peter’s turn to try to piece things together. Sylar had never said it outright but he’d insinuated and offered enough that it certainly gave the impression…

“But you want to sleep with me. So how does that work?”

The whole point of operation Get Fucked was in the charade that he, Sylar, was somehow interested, sexually, in men, namely Peter. It was a multitude of punishment, revenge, moral and social inferiority not to mention inferiority of strength; his belief system of right and wrong, masochism, a sick sense (or lack) of self-worth, somewhat familiar and it seemed inevitable even if Peter wasn’t the only person alive in the world. He’d been there when Angela and Arthur had brought Peter home for the first time - he knew this man; he’d practically raised him. With their history, he didn’t think Peter would deign to do anything to actually pleasure him. Sylar was an opportunist.

“Peter, even a blind man could see you’re good-looking,” he said to muddy the waters and avoid an actual answer.

Damn him, Peter wasn’t done. He took a leap of uncharacteristic abstraction and connected his answer with the question asked. “So you’re…exploring?”

Try ‘completely new at this’, Sylar thought. But he replied, “Everything with you is a new horizon, as always.”

Later…

“Do you think you’re gay?” Peter asked far more directly this time when the subject of priests in the Church arose, thereby leading to Sylar’s disgust on its handling of molesting priests. He’d been quite obviously disgusted at the practice and again, Peter picked up on the inference of homosexuality being bad. “Or bisexual?”

“Sure.” It neither yes or no or even confirmation by identifying with one of the options.

Peter’s eyes narrowed as he caught that. “Is that what this is about?”

“What’s what about, Peter?” Sylar asked innocently. Bi means two, so liking gay blow jobs and getting fucked? The other way around? Or liking...guys and girls? Is that even possible? I'm from New York, Pete. I don't know about any of this stuff.

“Either you haven’t come out of the closet yet, and you won’t for whatever reason - my guess is your mom or the Church told you it was bad.”

“Sodomy, you mean? They have a word for it.” He’d heard it before, too, aimed at himself. “Nah. She told me I was going to Hell no matter what I did. I wouldn’t want to imagine my life having that extra label to deal with - a wanted murderer with nothing but abilities who’s also gay.  How many people do you think would help me then? It’s different for you. My life is hard enough as it is. I don’t…That’s never been an important facet of my life. It’s not a priority,” Sylar stated bluntly.

Peter was blinking, trying to assemble that. “Sodomy is associated more with rape, you know. But what does the rest of that mean?”

“It means sex is a sinful, occasional perk, according to my…mother. Puritanical, remember? Technically we shouldn’t be ‘spilling our seed’ unless it’s inside a vagina to make a kid. That means no masturbation. Monsters really shouldn’t be getting any regardless, right? God forbid I procreate. The world might end.”

“Masturbation’s medically a proven benefit. When it’s not at an addictive stage, of course. And no sex outside of marriage, I’m familiar,” Peter nodded. “Is that…what you believe?”

“Ha! You know it isn’t. You said you had a dream about me having sex with Elle. I’ve had sex before.”

“Then…why the hang up?”

Because I’m not gay. “Because it’s not likely to benefit me,” Sylar admitted truthfully even if he was still blowing smoke-screens.
