Ooo! Love what you did with that! Something I didn't say in beta was how much I liked this part: "An older woman, the color grey following her, the scent of dust and mold and some kind of herbal tea and cheap, past-expiration-date laundry detergent surrounding her. She smelt of blood and warmth and neglect."

That's so vivid! I almost suggested you switch it to chamomile tea to be distinct, but I decided that Sylar might not know and anyway, she might like a variety of them, and also it left it up to to the reader's imagination and most readers probably don't know what chamomile smells like.

It's a good little story. We nearly all ended up writing "Spirit" as someone being haunted. I had wondered when I was thinking of what to write for it if people would tend to take it as a haunting, or as someone being full of spirit, feisty, and determined. Interesting to see how we all took it the same way!

Thank you kindly! Your beta gave me the last little touch it needed. I read your email and went "Yesss...that's it exactly!" You're so much more interested in the actual form of writing, it comes in handy, clearly; it pushed me to give some beginning-middle-end/start-conflict-resolution steps that I tend to ignore when writing.

Chamomile occured to me. I tried to think of tea flavors/smells for all of 30 seconds and gave it up as useless. One, I couldn't think of any teas! Two, I didn't want to pin it down to just one, and Three, I didn't know which one Virginia would be because, well, I don't know any teas!

See, no. I'm really torqued off because I've been trying to write my anti-muses: Peter and Nathan. I had good ideas for them that were not haunting 'spirit' based, the feisty, determined, passionate meaning of the word. And I forgot them and had, like, all of three days to churn something out. And now the next challenge is favorite pairing, so it's back to my comfort zone...what a partial-bummer ;)

Chamomile is a light, floral tea. It's an herbal infusion or tisane, actually, because "tea" is only made from the leaves of one particular type of plant. Hot water plus anything else might be called herbal "tea", but it's not proper. Not that I'm proper.

Anyway, chamomile is yellow, like the flowers it's derived from. It has mild sedative qualities. I tried feeding it to my hyperactive, ADHD son back when we were exploring options other than medication. Put enough sugar in it and he loved it! But of course that was self-defeating. I used to drink it when I had more trouble sleeping at night than I do now. It's calming and one of the few herbal teas I've tried that actually has the effect it's touted to have. I can easily see Virginia, as a nervous, easily unsettled woman, drinking a lot of it!

You write emotional intensity really well. I see where you took the adds I suggested and swapped out words for ones that were more vivid and packed more punch! That's great!

Hey, this comment is almost a plot bunny somehow. Now that you've explained it so well, I can see Virginia drinking camomille tea. But what about the others, what are their favorite beverages? Who is very picky about their brand of beer, who can't stand drinking anything ice cold, who only drinks bottled water, etc?... I'm thinking about the little everyday rituals people do every day almost without thinking about it. Every night at 8.30 pm, Virginia gets her favorite cup and warms the water, and so on... Like a series of drabbles. :)

Wow this is a very powerful piece. I love the idea of Sylar's mother haunting him. Well done!
