The pain didn't come till this morning, not a searing pain, but a dull, deep throb. I strained my trapezius, the large muscle that begins at the back of your skull and connects to your shoulder blade and the end of your upper spine. This automotive failure is so hard. People mock how pervasive the American automotive market is in our nation, but it really is a factor in so many livelihoods; especially here in Michigan. The place my mother works derives 70% of its business from the automotive industry -- fortunately it's not ALL wrapped up in GM, though Toyota, Hyundai, and Nissan are all cancelling orders at the moment -- and over the summer peaked at something like 500 employees. After today, they'll be down to 300 after their third or fourth lay-off since September. And they're looking to do another lay-off after Christmas. They were the biggest employer in this town, surpassing (I believe) even the hospital ( ... )

You don't know me, except that once when I was a very baby dyke I went to Affirmations and was introduced to you & yr dreadlocks & wanted to be you when I grew up. I have no idea how I stumbled upon you here but having done so I will say that you write like a midwestern Jeanette Winterson, which is my favorite kind of Jeanette Winterson.
