For a motto may I suggest "I will do my best in everthing I do." It is deceptively simple sounding, but quite tough in practice. It invites you to examine what you do carefully and determine if you can do things better. It feeds back into that continuous improvement cycle.
Setting yourself up to have to win everything everytime is an unattainable goal. In my opinion goals should be achievable. Also, setting a goal of victory at any cost can often blind to the point of missing out on other opportunites, or worse wasting effort on something that you no longer really want.
Don't knock setting goals of getting enough. Once you have enough, you are then free to go find ways to find fullfillment. Check out the hierachy of needs. While there is little basis in actual Science, it helps to visualize the building blocks to self-actualiztion. All you need is enough at a lower level to make significant progress at a higher level.
Uck! Now I have gotten all preachy. Anyway, Best of luck.

joe -- thank you ---
i have had time to think and get my brain a little more straight - i'm mentally healthier than i've ever been.
the cost has been high.
today is the first time i've ever seen your post - but it is odd - for that thought came to me ... to do everything "the best i can" ... a while ago and i've been living by it.
successes and failures are all learning opportunities. so i've become a student.
