You're right, the dubbed and translated works do pretty good, but there does seem to a resistance to promoting the creation of original French-language sci-fi. Which boggles the mind, since Jules Verne is practically the grandfather of sci-fi!

One argument I once heard was that since the French language is "endangered", energy should be spent on crafting enduring, "quality" literature and not wasted on uncultured genre fiction. I'm not sure how true that is, but it wouldn't be too hard to believe.
