When he was a little boy living in England, Naruse had been the focus of attention. While his father was often away on business his mother doted over him and showed him off as much as she possibly could. He had a natural charm about him and impeccable manners and all of his mother's friends thought he was adorable. Later on that admiration transferred to their daughters and even their sons, and Naruse wooed and won them all without crushing anyone's heart.

Japan was not that different from England; both countries had their views on what was proper, and Naruse was a patient man who knew how miserable his time at Bell Liberty could become if he started off on the wrong foot. So he settled for polite, cheerful and slightly flirtatious and instantly won over most of his teachers. His classmates took a little longer, and Naruse blamed that on the rumor stating he'd tried to molest one of them. It was greatly exaggerated really. All he'd done was ask Saionji Kaoru to dance since he had the hips and legs for it. Although in hindsight he realized he shouldn't have called Saionji his honey while making the offer. Or touched the other man's hips.

People often asked Naruse who his first love was and were always surprised when he said he didn't have one. "What?", they'd say, "You've dated so many and never loved?". And he would try to explain to them that love wasn't everything, he was quite happy without it and couldn't they see all those people who were destroyed by what they called love? There had been a girl once who had claimed to love him, but they would fight every time they met. It isn't worth the trouble, he'd say, and would smile while people cast strange looks his way.

Naruse had never understood this obsession with love, until Endo Kazuki entered Bell Liberty.

---

The first time Naruse approached Kazuki he did so with a smile and a handshake, both of which were returned. He offered to show Kazuki around the campus and Kazuki accepted with an amused smile that enchanted Naruse. They toured the clubs and the classrooms, took a stroll among the trees surrounding the schools, and when Naruse noticed Kazuki falling behind, he offered to carry the first year back to the dorms. His offer was met with a burst of laughter and a grin that stayed on the other man's face until they parted at the door. It was a grin that haunted Naruse's dreams, and when he woke up he decided that this must be what love feels like.

The second time they met was at the cafeteria. Naruse had been stopping by for a sandwich before practice, but when he saw Kazuki sitting at a table by himself he decided tennis could wait a few more minutes (or hours, depending on how well it went). He called out the freshman's name, omitting the 'honey' he would have added normally, and slid into the empty chair on Kazuki's right.

"Want to share my sandwich?" was perhaps not the best pickup line but it made Kazuki laugh, and Naruse considered it a point in his favor and didn't regret that he never made it to practice.

Naruse didn't really know if it was the looks that attracted him, or the fact that Kazuki was intelligent and wise beyond his years that fascinated him. But when, on their third meeting, he kissed Kazuki and felt the first year kiss him back, he thought he might finally leave his uncommitted years behind.

---

Whenever Naruse broke it off with someone, he had a ritual he would follow. First, he would invite the other person over for dinner. The setting would be romantic, with candles and wine. The conversation would be normal, mundane, and at the end of dinner he would apologize with a soft smile. "It's time to end things," he'd say, and then he'd comfort his date should that be needed. Sometimes, his date would ask for one more night, and he would grant that, and they would part with minimal regrets. He'd never thought his ritual cruel; after all he made no promises at the beginning or end.

His sixth date with Kazuki started off with the usual kiss-and-grope in the first year's room. Naruse had started that tradition, claiming that if he didn't kiss Kazuki beforehand he'd just be distracted the rest of the night. It caused them to arrive late at their destination more often than not, but Kazuki didn't seem bothered by it and Naruse took that as a sign of approval.

Kazuki dragged him off campus afterwards, to a small restaurant that catered to students. "The hamburgers here are almost as good as the ones in the cafeteria," he informed Naruse, and while the tennis player had never been particularly fond of hamburgers he enjoyed watching Kazuki devour them. It was the only time his lover wasn't the very picture of elegance and sophistication and actually seemed as young as he was supposed to be.

Most dates would end in Kazuki's room, and Naruse would sneak off to his own bed before dawn so that Shinomiya wouldn't scold both of them. But this night Kazuki's hand on his chest stopped him from going in.

"This has been fun, but we have to end it."

Naruse didn't ask for one more night.

---

A phone rang, terse words were exchanged, and Naruse watched Kazuki rush out of the cafeteria, hamburger left untouched. He found himself following the younger man, watching as he ran into the infirmary and landed on his knees next to the only occupied bed. His hands trembled when they brushed over red hair, and Naruse recognized the expression on his face, the feeling behind it, and cursed himself for wishing himself the object of that look.

Naruse had always been the flirt, the heartbreaker, the object of desire. He knew from experience that life goes on despite everything; he still had a whole year left at Bell Liberty and he did not intend to spend it in seclusion. He would find someone new and everything would go back to normal.

And if Kazuki knew the reason he fixed his attentions on Ito Keita, he never said, and Naruse never explained.
