agency) $K saying I have the job at $D!!! There's a slight chance I may
be able to swing something at $T, but I'm not going to count on it -- the
timing is rotten, and I'm not in a position to take even a medium-risk

If it is a shorter-term job, you can continue to look around at $T and other letters of the alphabet while you're working at $D. :)

I'll definitely start looking at options a couple of months before the contract ends; with a 12-month contract I wouldn't want to start any earlier. But I probably will try to get involved in some open-source projects.
