"Of course, this suggests that it's probably safer not to try" - it's *always* safer not to try, but it's also much more difficult to make any progress that way, unfortunately. I tend to take a not-entirely-disastrous encounter as a template, use itsy bitsy baby steps and then repeat them on other occasions until it gradually becomes easier. But mileage varies.
True. Past a certain point the non-disasters are pretty thin on the ground, though. (Of course, the disasters are pretty thin on the ground, too; just not quite as thin.)
Read "When your child is invisible" and if I could figure out a way to concisely explain it to a non-fan, I would have commented "And this is why my daughter was raised in fandom as much as possible." Especially furrydom and filkdom. I owe you and so many others a LOT.
Oh - and when quoting me, could you make sure the lj journal text as well as the link itself spells it kayshapero with an e? Since the link has it right it still works, but still...
Story of my life - when I was a kid I had a first name nobody could spell because there were a zillion different ways to do so ("Kathryn"), then I go and marry a guy with a last name with a variant spelling of something everybody KNOWS they know how to spell ("Shapero"). Ah well, my middle name is Elizabeth... :)
