My nominations for this year's Yuletide fandoms:

1. Tom's Midnight Garden - Philippa Pearce
2. Drop Dead Fred (1991)
3. The Land of Green Ginger - Noel Langley

After checking the large unofficial spreadsheet of fandoms nominated so far, I went with the childhood favorites nostalgia.

You know, despite being a Rik Mayall fan, I still have yet to see Drop Dead Fred! Maybe I oughta.

*nods* Indeed you should!
And then write/read about it for Yuletide, which ought to be one great big Rik Mayall (and Robin Wiliams) tribute this year. IMHO.

What's The Land of Green Ginger about? I'm not familiar with Noel Langley.

The adventures of Abu Ali, son of Aladdin... with many Gratuitous Capital Letters.

It's kind of a parody remix of the Arabian Nights and assorted fairy-tales, with a strong element of British pantomime. Plot makes about as much sense, objectively, as The Princess Bride - but has lots of fun along the way.

- a prophecy the hero is born to fulfill
- a gorgeous heroine and her oppressive daddy
- the bratty son of the Djinn who helped Aladdin
- a female talking Mouse, conjured up by accident, with Snape's personality
- two Wicked Princes, most dastardly indeed, and their Small Slave who's very much smarter
- a Green Dragon who sings a song and promises to eat Abu Ali with a Lettuce Salad and Tomatoes Sliced Thin
- the Land of Green Ginger, which flies around and lands wherever it likes
- the Narrator's ongoing asides, digressions, and entreaties to the Gentle Reader

More of my ramblings about this book in my Dear Yuletide Writer 2010 letter. And the first chapter's online at
