Summary: John smiles at Rodney, and Rodney finally figures out something.

Author's note: Jeez, finally, after a very dry spell. Thanks for the encouragement, y'all.

Rodney’s in the middle of a victory lap - a massively brilliant idea regarding power consumption in the ‘jumpers which will mean farther and faster - when John does it.

Just about to start in on explaining how far and how fast, Rodney turns, because John is going to love this.

John's leaning against the wall of Rodney’s lab, hands behind his back, and the way he’s looking at Rodney nearly causes him to trip over his own feet while standing still.

The smile is not about the jumpers, is so not about the jumpers, and that's, that's....

John ducks his head and spares a glance toward the door as if to make sure no one else is there, then meets Rodney’s eyes again, smiling. Softly, deliberately.

Rodney can’t think, can’t breathe for a moment because, wow, and also, huh? He opens his mouth to say something, but there is absolutely nothing there.

It occurs to him he’s seen this smile before and categorized it as one of John’s “laughing on the inside” smiles but the look in his eyes is not just laughter and why did he not know that?

“Rodney?” John smile dims, and no. He makes it over to the wall under John’s wary gaze, grabs John’s wrist and tries out a smile of his own. John swallows hard, eyes flickering and the smile seems to be going over okay because John is staring at it.

“I have another idea,” Rodney whispers, because he can’t manage anything louder.

“Do you?” And this time John sets off heat and light and want in Rodney’s chest just with that smile, so Rodney leans in to taste it. It’s just as devastating on the inside.
