I liked how this went from being so bleak, with Rodney seeing how some things went better with him not there, to a more balanced view with John running the program himself, and getting Carson to as well. A good resolution.

Neat! I enjoyed all the what-ifs and AU scenarios. A nice segue into the romance, too.

nice one! I loved the sucker punch when John so casually pointed out that he'd be *dead* without Rodney there -- so true!! Rodney was the one who finally got the damn pods to retract (and Radek too)

besides, it's true. Rodney is mission essential to Atlantis and especially to John, and it shines through bright and strong in this story. their voices and their actions are clear and totally in character. and it fit the prompt quite nicely too. excellent!!

An interesting conceit. It's always jarring when I'm reminded just how fragile Rodney's ego is - sometimes it seems impenetrable but you were right in the way you wrote this, that his weak point is the lives of people he cares about.
