I'm impressed by your long track record of going to cons, and how fannish your whole family is. It's a bit harder as I live a long way away from most of the action, but even so, I'm pretty avoidant.

"angst for the sake of angst, or about things which characters...can control but choose not to, is a real turn-off."
Completely agree!

We live about 5 miles north of Boston; this is a very easy place to be fannish! And I grew up in metro DC which in some ways was even more intensely fan-friendly.

even so, I'm pretty avoidant.

I'm just not a very private person... it's very hard for me not to overshare, hard for me not to ask the sorts of questions that you use to draw someone out IRL but are just plain rude in fandom.

"Oh, and though I like characters to find their challenges angst-provoking, angst for the sake of angst, or about things which characters either have no control over or, more maddeningly, which they can control but choose not to, is a real turn-off."

I have no idea what McShep is, but that line certainly struck a cord with me. Thanks. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

This is what appealed to me about science fiction in the first place.

As for, what's McShep is :-) It's John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, two of the major drivers of Stargate Atlantis. I'm not a native slasher, but were I to meet Col. John Sheppard at a party I wouldn't for one moment think he was straight; and Rodney (head scientist) is clearly head-over-heels for him, so.
