Interview

1. What was your first fandom??

You would think this would be an easy question to answer, right? And yet… *g* In terms of collecting memorabilia, rabidly watching/re-watching episodes, and imaging a million-and-one scenarios I would have liked to have seen on-screen the nod goes to Star Trek: Original Series. I still love classic Trek, and I blame PBS and Gene Roddenberry for molding the mind of an impressionable young girl. In terms of reading fanfiction, I found X-Files/Sentinel/Highlander all around the same time, and discovered that fandom could deliver on all those longed-for on-screen moments. If we're talking about the first fandom I wrote for, then the honor falls to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But if we're going to take a trip into the wayback machine, and visit young gothphyle as she first discovers that a book can capture the mind long after the pages are closed and that some characters really do seem to have a life of their own, then I tip my cap to Sir Arthur Conon Doyle and the wonder that is Sherlock Holmes!

2. How did you get into writing fanfic/creating fanart?

I started writing fanfic for two very different reasons: I wanted to explore possibilities I knew the networks never would, and I wanted an escape from the demands that school was placing upon my brain. Academia can work miracles when it comes to stripping and stifling creativity, and I wanted to reclaim that for myself. Add to that a pretty healthy h/c kink, and the path seemed clear.

3. Is SGA your main squeeze, or are you poly-fandom-ous?

I am most definitely poly-fandom-ous, but I tend to write for far fewer fandoms than I read, and to write one fandom at a time. So… I guess I would describe myself as a serial fandomist who stays on good terms with old flames and lavishes a lot of attention on my current fandom love. At present, I am actively reading: SGA, Sherlock, White Collar, and The Eagle.

4. What makes John and Rodney such an inspiring couple for you?

One of my friends said it best, and I'm going to shamelessly steal her line: "every soldier needs a scientist." Enough said!

5. Who's your favorite, John or Rodney (or both)? How come?

I truly love them both, and for reasons that compliment each other. I love that John, for all his charm, is the one I can see pining in secret; I also love that Rodney, for all his bluster, really does care about John and his team. Most importantly, I love that they are both ruthless enough when they need to be to fight a war on the edge of the universe and still win it.

6. Where can people find more of your work (McShep or otherwise)?

My fic is either posted directly to my fic journal, or linked in the memories there: hernes_daughter. I am in process of uploading things to Archive of Our Own, but am not moving very quickly.

7. Pick a piece/story of yours that stands out for you. Give us links and tell us why!

For SGA, I would have to pick Manual Communication; because I really struggle with writing dialog, and I adore the chance to have the characters "say" so much to one another without speaking a word.

8. Finish this sentence: John and Rodney walk into a bar...

I stay close at hand, because when things go bad (which they doubtless will), the best chance of rescue is to be near them!

9. What question do you wish we'd asked?

I think you covered all the bases!
