The Letter A

Oct 29, 2010 21:31

I've seen it done in a zine before so I thought I would do it here, since I am no longer doing zines anymore. It would be my alphabet issue. I'm not gonna put it on my zine filter but will put it under a cut so you can read or skip what you like.

words, zine, uni, alphabet issue, books

Oh Thanks so pleased someone liked it :). I only got a 2.2 in my degree in the end (I screwed up my 2nd year) though I was about0.03 % off a 2.1. I'm not sure what an MA would do for me. I've looked at doing distance learning which I would like but I've only found really dull degrees and I want to do American Lit for sure, nothing else gets me so passionate. I LOVED teaching lit.

I loved reading this. I focused on American Literature in my BA, but all my lecturers except one were more interested in teaching what they liked rather than giving a wider and more compelling picture. I would have loved to have someone like your lecturer, I'm sure I would have loved American Literature much more than I do now, I guess.

Oh, and also..what did you study?

What did I study?

My degree is in Humanities. I studied within that Literature, History and Philosophy.

I studied amoung other stuff - Freud and the philosphy of pyschoanalysis, Early Modern European History, European Literature - 19th and 20th century, Ethics,~Philosophy and Rights, The Enlighenment,

In terms of what we looked at in American Lit we looked at

Shakespeare's The Tempest as our first text, Huckleberry Finn, The Call of The Wild, St Mawr by Laurence, The Bear by Faulkner among other short stories and extracts, My Antonia, Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night, Farewell My Lovely, Phillip Roth, Ragtime by E. L. Doctorow, Ernest Hemmingway, Hawthorn A scarlet Letter, Melville, Lolita. Funny I can't remember if Steinbeck was on the list now. I suppose he must have been. Bascially I've read more and more of the stuff I got introduced to during this course.

Dudley was wonderful. Everything you want a lecturer to be.

That sounds so interesting! I studied Modern Languages and Cultures for my BA, and Comparative Literature for my MA. I did the BA in Italy, and it is really different from how uni is here (I had like 40 classes to follow in 3 years!) so I studied a bit of everything, mainly languages, literature relevant to those languages, history, philosophy and anthropology ( ... )
