I don't ever remember Heathers being considered a "girl movie" by anyone. I remember it being considered an alt/goth movie, a la The Rivers Edge**.
Editing to add: **which I am assuming you have seen. If you haven't, then maybe it's less about having been a boy than it is about not having been a Kool Kid! :)
I'm not saying boys made a big deal out of it; the resistance was more along the lines of, "Eh, not really for me," implicitly saying that because the protagonist (and title characters) were all female, it was targeted at girls. And it was certainly not marketed as a date movie (though a girl who'd seen that with me on a date would have been AWESOME).
I did see and love River's Edge! Different story, there ;-)
I don't know how you managed that either, amigo. Absolutely love that movie, and pretty sure I saw it in the theater with a whole group when it first came out. "Eskimo!" :)
I'm sorry you didn't see "Heathers" then, but glad you've rectified it.
I used to enjoy going to movies alone; I saw "Heathers" in Australia in 1989 and it blew me away, so I went more than once. I don't like going alone so much anymore, but that's probably more because I'm so tired of talking and texting during the movies. Watching a DVD at home isn't always as fun, but at least I can hear the movie without distraction.
The last time I saw a movie in a theater, it was at one of those "fork and screen" deals: Everyone has a recliner (cool idea), but they squeak whenever someone moves, which is ALL THE TIME. There's a waiter who brings you food and drink (another cool idea), but that means you listen to people ordering stuff and look at the waiter walking around the whole time. And finally, the idiots in there all feel the need to talk because they're a little farther apart. UGH.
Even a normal movie is disturbed by such things as you mention. When did it suddenly become okay to text during a movie? JUST TURN IT OFF. There's a power button on that thing, y'know. MANY PEOPLE ARE ASSHOLES.
Love watching movies at home, preferably with others but alone is cool, too. At a theater, the flawed experience just isn't worth it when I'm alone.
