The Iron Giant: Unhappy-Ending Version

Okay, if you're like me, you loved The Iron Giant. It's one of the best science-fiction movies ever, a touching story of friendship and meaningful social commentary (both past and present, as discussed in this Wired article). Only in retrospect. And of course it wasn't me who ruined it; it's the writers and director are responsible for all this ruination.

You know, I wondered if there was ever going to be a sequel where another Iron Giant comes to the earth to take care of business.

On the subject of if the Iron Giant, once re-assembled, would follow its original programing, I don't think you have to worry. The movie implies that it has (or gains) the power to choose whether to follow its programming or not.

But perhaps we are too gloomy? Perhaps the sequel could be that the Iron Giant returns to space, to emancipate his fellow robots from their role as murderous weapons. That would be awesome!

I love that movie. For some reason, I already knew that. Or assumed that. Was this something as an extra on the DVD?

Might have been an extra that wasn't on my (old) DVD. Or I might have blocked it.
