The ship was alien. It was always so alien. It was that thought that turned inside Rush’s head. It kept repeating over and over.

He wasn’t sure for how long. Time wasn’t a factor. Living didn’t seem to be a factor. Or was it? They obviously were keeping him alive. If you could call waiting and dreading the next moment living.

It was a strange sensation from floating restrained in a tank of liquid to being yanked out onto the hard decking of the small spacecraft. Gasping, coughing, and pleading for something even you’ve forgotten the meaning of. Everything was sharp after the numbing liquid, smells, light, sound and the pain. A different all encompassing pain you’ve never felt before.

They don’t stop until you can’t scream anymore.

Rush starts to forget. Was there anything but this? Wasn’t there a ship out there? A magnificent Destiny on the horizon not far away? He can’t remember anything but the tank.

And a name. Everett Young.

*******************

His feet slapped against the metal of the floor. His breath huffing in and out in panicked glee.

Freedom!

Even if only for moments it was such euphoria Rush almost cried with joy. His body couldn’t handle this movement, everything ached from lack of use and numerous scars. Rush pushed past it all and propelled himself forward.

The ship was much smaller than this. How was he getting so far away? He stopped, wheezing and tried to stay standing on shaky legs. The design was different and achingly familiar.

“You’re on the Destiny Rush, you’re safe”

Rush jerked, a startled cry escaping his lips. Col. Everett Young stood just down the corridor. Hands in his pockets, posture casual and non-threatening.

“Everyone’s out looking for you.” Young continued softly.

“Everyone’s looking. Always looking.” Rush took a step closer to the wall “You’re lying to me. Again”

“I’m not lying to you.” Young didn’t move. “You know I’ve never lied to you.”

He couldn’t believe it. If he did the world would shatter into a thousand pieces and he’d never be able to pick them all up again. Young didn’t move his gaze intense but oddly calming.

“W-why?” Rush curled his arms around his body. This was the most he’d used his voice for talking in a while.

A floating ball hovered into the passageway. A Kino! His brain supplied. Rush stared at it.

Seconds later Rush could hear pounding feet rapidly approaching. They found him! Panic made his breath speed up and his lungs ache, heart pounding in his chest. This wasn’t the Destiny this was some game they were playing with him. His eyes darted around the passage. He couldn’t hide, there was nowhere to run. His gaze landed on Young again.

“Don’t worry. I’ll make sure you’re alright” Young smiled “Just relax”

“Dr Rush!” Eli called appearing around the bend and coming up in front of him, blocking his view of Everett. It looked like Eli. A little more tired and worn than what Rush remembered. Eli’s smile seemed forced and fake.

“You have us all worried, running around like idiots” Eli huffed with his fake grin. There was a deeper emotion hidden in his eyes.

“What’s the worry?” Rush looked up over Eli’s shoulder. Scott, Greer and T.J. had arrived. He couldn’t see Young.

“He said he’d stay. Said he wouldn’t lie” Rush murmured tapping out a rhythm with his fingers. A simple repetitive one he’d come up with and refined for months. Eli glanced over his own shoulder then back to Rush. A confused expression warring with his false smile.

“Come on we need to get you back to the infirmary” Eli reached out a hand and Rush reacted. Jerking backwards, a half cry half whimper wrenching out of his chest as he dropped to the ground. Please no more pain. He’d do anything.

********************

“That was really very manly. Dropping to the floor and passing out.” Young smirked down at him. Rush glared up at the man. Helpless, strapped to the infirmary bed.

“I think I have the right to be a little less manly due to the endless months of trauma and alien drugs I’ve been subjected to.” Rush huffed looking away to where T.J. was asleep at her desk.

“Trauma huh? Is that what we’re calling it?” Young sat down on the edge of the bed.

“Yes” Rush barked turning back to bare his teeth at Young.

“Well at least you’ve calmed down.” Young slipped his fingers around Rush’s wrist, feeling his pulse “Do you believe me now?”

“I can’t deny the facts” Rush said distractedly. Young brushed his fingers along Rush’s hand then got up from the bed.

“Get some rest then” Young walked towards the door. “Lots of questions tomorrow.”

Rush watched him go with mixed emotions. Everything was happening too fast he felt exhausted. Young disappeared out the door. He couldn’t even remember how he had gotten back to the Destiny.

Was this all real? For the first time in a long time Rush felt hope. He was home.

“Go to sleep Rush” Young’s voice echoed down the corridor into the room. Rush glanced at T.J. again. She didn’t move. He gave into his fatigue and slept.

*****************

It was the sound of his voice that woke him. A hushed tone.

“T.J.”

Rush could hear the rustle of clothing. He didn’t open his eyes. He was still so tired.

“Sir?” She cleared her throat. Glass dishes clattered against each other. “Sorry I didn’t mean to fall asleep, it’s just-”

Her voice trails off and he can hear the pity in it. Feel it almost against his skin.

“It’s alright. You should get some rest.” Young sounds like a worried parent. Rush supposes that Young really is a parent to the whole crew.

“I’m fine.” Her chair rattles as she stands “Not the most comfortable sleep I’ve had but definitely not the worst.”

There’s a pause. Rush can feel their gaze on him.

“He seems better” Young says quietly, footsteps approaching softly. T.J. shadows him and they stop not quite at his bedside.

“You mean he’s stopped screaming?” T.J. says with a twist of something in her voice.

He doesn’t remember screaming.

Young is silent. A soft huff of breath and rustle of clothing tells Rush he’s probably running a hand through his hair or over his face.

“Sir you couldn’t have known that he’d survived the rock-slide. It’s not your fault. You barely made it back”

Rush seizes this information. A rock-slide? There was a planet with mountains, rocky terrain and a ship?

Young snorts out a harsh sound, then sound of his hand slapping against his thigh.

“It’s my fault. I should never have left him.” Young sounds weary, too much pressure on his shoulders.

T.J. seems to understand that there’s nothing she can say to change Young’s mind and stays quiet.

Rush was too tired to keep himself awake and slipped back into darkness.
