I have just refused to sign a contract with an interpreting agency that gives its interpreters and translators lots of work, but pays them poorly and emphasises that interpreters are 'independent contractors' and as such they are not entitled to any leave or superannuation provisions ( Read more... )

You have my admiration for not signing the contract. I hope things turn out well for you and the others who are taking a stand. (Maybe you can form your own co-operative agency?)

The world-weary part of me wonders if the notion of solidarity has gone, as they say Down Here, down the gurgler (= plughole), and if everyone is now thinking in terms of Looking After Number One and Unions Being An Unnecessary Evil.

It truly saddens me how the courageous people who fought so hard for the rights we enjoy now (unions, feminists and so forth) are forgotten, considered irrelevant, or reviled.

Thanks, sweetheart. Founding a co-operative interpreting agency? To each according to their needs etc., profits equally shared?! YAY if somebody else did all the paperwork!!
